Sometimes, people have a different way of connecting with a feeling than the usual way of talking or sharing opinions. Many people have a certain place they go to that reminds them of something special, a certain song that makes an effect on their emotions when it is played, or even a person they feel comfortable with. It is often something that helps a person escape from the troubles of reality, which winds up making a bond that is hard to be broken. Sometimes just because the person is older doesn’t mean they’re right. It can mean that there is not enough knowledge attained by the older person about a certain subject that the younger person might have. This is exactly what the problem was between the narrator and Sonny, which was the scene John Reilly recollects in his article where "the narrator asked if Sonny meant to play like Louis Armstrong, only to be told that Charlie Parker was the model. Hard as it is to believe, he had never heard of Bird until Sonny mentioned him" (Reilly). He followed this claim by stating, "This ignorance reveals more than a gap between fraternal generations. It represents a cultural chasm" (Reilly). Reilly interprets the use of "Blues as a key metaphor" in the story of "Sonny 's Blues" as a method to cure the ignorance between two separate generations. Sonny, over and over again, explains to his older brother that music is his voice, his way of expressing his suffering and releasing his pent-up feelings.
