The Theme Of Redemption In The Kite Runner

In life, as humans, we all mess up and to be able to redeem ourselves is such a critical and powerful moment. In Khaled Hosseini’s novel, The Kite Runner, we learn about Amir, the main character’s life story and journey to earning redemption from his mistakes he made in his childhood. We also see how Amir’s best friend and servant Hassan, and his father Baba affect Amir’s journey. The main theme that is represented in this story is that the road to redemption leads to many truths and lessons that are uncovered and sacrifices that are made. Throughout his life, Amir learns many “truths” such as life is not always as easy as it seems, and that the truth may not always be what you wanted to hear or what you thought. Hassan was always the friend that never left Amir’s side or betrayed him in any way, because he adored Amir and respected him. The most famous words said by Hassan in this entire book are, “For you a thousand times over!” (67). These words make the reader understand just how much Hassan loved Amir and would do anything for him. One day Amir makes the decision to betray his friendship with Hassan, when Hassan is in a terrible situation. This mistake to “ignore” Hassan is the beginning of many hard and regretful years for Amir. As time goes on and Amir continues to try to forget, a reminder of the past reappears and he is forced to face his bad decision and maybe earn redemption. When a family friend, Rahim Khan calls, and says, “There is a way to be good again”
