Although each chapter contained information about events in the past, it ended with how those events applied in the present and how those past events shaped the present society of Nome, Alaska. Reading this book did change my thoughts on the theme of the story. Although the importance of teamwork was a major and important part of the plot, the book is styled so that each chapter starts out with a historic event that took place and then how it shaped the present. This included how the first dogsled team came to be or the history of alaska and how it shaped it modern culture etc. This makes me think that rather than teamwork, the theme is more along the lines of everything in history affects the present and future.…
Their determination and attitude towards the situation is what helps them reach the goals they set and achieve success. And that’s what I think that the author was trying to relay to the reader as the theme for the book. One of the reasons I say that is because of an example in the book. After getting down the mountain one of the news reporters asked him how did he have the effort to make it down the mountain and he answered, “my dad always said to never give…
But it also is a reflection of the imperfection if human beings and darker side of life, like poverty and death; by the end of the first chapters we already have some suicides, Doc finds a dead girl on the beach etc. Because all the stories happen in the same neighborhood the book gives you a sense of community, no matter how different the characters seem to be, for example Doc is a marine biologist, Mack and the boys are just a group of bums, Lee Chong is the owner of a grocery store where you can buy almost everything, and Dora is the owner of a brothel. As the chapters unravel as you read you start to have an understanding of the characters in this little community; Lee Chong is shown to be hard headed but at the same time kind hearted, Mack and the boys are described by the book as ideals, even though they don’t have much they seem to live life in peace and free of the worries of modern…
He includes the importance of symbols in literature and helps us establish a base for interpreting them in text. While doing this, he also stresses the literary significance of irony. In his first chapter Foster starts the book off by discussing theme. in this chapter ‘Every Trip Is a Quest (Except When It’s Not)’, he talks about the theme of quests and what that means for not only the character is going to go through but, the storyline in general.…

This book makes you think in a way you wouldn't with any other story. This can help students question what tone to read the book in, it may also 4uyjklhelp them question decisions in their own lives. Some students would especially like the fantasy elements of the story which may help inspire them in class to read more. A weakness that is found in the book is how it can be quite bland and uninteresting at times.…
Every story has to have an element of “The Journey” within it. this is the most important plot pattern archetype in literature. The journey in a novel or story isn’t always an actual movement from one place to another; the journey can be internal (mental/emotional). Often the journey can be represented as either a struggle or a desire to achieve a goal and most stories start off with the main character in search of something.. In the three novels read this summer we see this archetype, both internal and external journeys.…
This is apparent in James Dashner’s novel, “The Maze Runner”, as the stages of departure, initiation, and return are all evident in making connections to the plot of his story. Similarly, some of the steps from those stages also help clarify the theme of “The Maze Runner”. Dashner allows readers to see how he is able to employ a hero’s journey cycle to make his plot and theme better, developing it. Thus, Dashner is able to express the idea that the hero’s journey cycle has the ability to communicate and expand upon the theme and plot of a story. On a final note, a hero’s journey, albeit differing from a novel’s plot and theme, may help reinforce the theme and plot of a…
It shows finding strength within oneself. Also staying positive when there's little hope. This is an important message to show people to be confidence in oneself and to stay positive even in bad times. My last piece of evidence is throughout the book Jonas becomes more…
In any book there can be more than one theme, a lesson or message the author wants you to learn. In Home of the Brave, to me, the strongest them is hope. Throughout the story Kek’s determination, optimism and can do attitude help the reader understand that hope can help you get through the tough times that life might throw your way. Sometimes in life we go through hard times, but we should never stop believing things can change. There are many experiences that Kek goes through in book that show the theme of hope.…
The fourth chapter, Dragons and Giants, teaches it’s readers not only how to be brave, but that being afraid can be okay too. You can’t have too much of either. The fifth and final chapter, The Dream,…
Another example, showing the theme is believing and being confident in one’s self is on page 156, the book states, “Kendra began pounding the horn over and over, as Amy waved her arms over her head, she ran back and forth besides the car, hoping the movement would attract attention to the helicopter.” Meaning, Amy was doing everything she could think of to get help or even attention so she could be found, showing that Amy and Kendra were both confident and believe in themselves to do everything in there power to try to be found. The Last example of showing a meaningful theme, is on page 164, the text adds, “I’m so proud of you, Amy’s mom said, You dad would be proud of you, too.” This text is showing how Amy was confident and believed in herself she was rescued and brought back home safely. All in all, it is clear to see that the book Stolen Children is captivating is because it contains a meaningful…
To Kill A Mockingbird connects to the reader in many ways one would not expect. In this book, Harper Lee shows many diverse themes such as empathy, loss of innocence, innocent victims, courage, and prejudice. Though the book does in fact show all of these themes, one of theme definitely shine throughout the entire book. The main theme, arguably, would be loss of innocence. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows loss of innocence through the rough experiences and mature events in Jem’s and Scout’s lives.…
But the most frightening thing we can do at such times is to turn our backs on it, to close our eyes.” This further explains the underlying message, or theme of the story, which is fear. The readers can infer…
This person finds out how harsh reality can be and how this brutal life is having a catastrophic impact on this individual. Additionally, through imagery, the readers are able to visualize how this man who’s been having a cheerful dream suddenly gets waken up and reminded of the cold and wretched life he’s unfortunately living. Similarly In Night…
