The Lovely Bones
2. The narrator of the story is Susie. Susie is narrating the story from a first-person point of view.
3. A tone shown demonstrated in my book is tragedy because a 14-year-old girl disappears, and no one has any clue what happened.
4. The story takes place in December of 1973 in Pennsylvania.
5. The conflict or main problem of the story is Susie’s death. Susie’s death takes place on December 6, 1973 by her family’s neighbor, Mr. Harvey.
6. The resolution of the story is that Susie’s family is learning to move on from Susie’s death and Mr. Harvey dies later from slipping on an icicle.

One major theme in The Lovely Bones is that love can only do so much. Only a few hours after Susie was murdered “my mother made phone calls and my father began going door to door in the neighborhood looking for me” (Sebold 49). This quote is showing that Susie’s mom and dad are worried about Susie, so they go around looking and asking everyone if they’ve seen her. However, it can only get them so far. The next move they make is calling the police and having them do an investigation. This is showing this theme because there was only a limited number of things Susie’s parents could’ve done to find her. Her parents can only do so much has hope the police find something and find whoever killed Susie. Another theme of The Lovely Bones is not having a family can determine the outcome of your actions. This is shown because throughout this story Susie’s killer, Mr. Harvey, is all alone and has no family. Therefore, he is jealous of all the happy families, such as Susie’s, and wants to tear them apart. As the officers are searching Mr. Harvey’s house they “grew uncomfortable … and found nothing except both the evidence of what they took to be extreme loneliness and a room full of beautiful dollhouses” (Sebold 192). Although the officers were impressed by Mr. Harvey’s readily to show his house the dollhouses made them a little suspicious.
