A major event in Book Six, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is the murder of Albus Dumbledore. Severus Snape is the murderer, however, this murder poses questions of where Snape’s loyalties lie; is it to Voldemort or Dumbledore? At first read, Snape’s murderous action may be seen to be fueled by selfishness but that is not the full truth; “Snape’s murdering of Dumbledore seems to place him squarely in Voldemort’s camp, but Rowling’s skillful development of Snape’s character might caution the reader to withhold judgment” (Nuechterlein). Snape and Dumbledore’s relationship was one built on trust and love, which Rowling shows when the reader learns that “the Potions Master (Snape) despises the thing which he is being asked to do to answer the plea of his Headmaster” (Nuechterlein). Snape is asked by Dumbledore himself to murder him since his murder is the only way Snape, Harry, and the rest of the wizarding world is safe. The actions taken by both Dumbledore and Snape show that they are both willing to do things like this in order to better each other and the others around them, so the underlying theme here is love. There are key differences between Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort for many reasons. J.K. Rowling uses their differences to illustrate their different views. While it is evident that Voldemort fears Dumbledore, he is more afraid of death: “Vanishing death is his stated goal in life” (Nuechterlein). Dumbledore, however, has “a higher station and power to love” (Nuechterlein). This “this power of love” is key theme that is presented throughout all 7 books in regards to various events where love triumphs over evil. Their alternate and opposite powers are highlighted by Rowling’s use of diction and characterization. Dumbledore’s character development shows how caring and humble he is. He plays such important roles in not only Harry’s but other characters such as Ron Weasely and Hermione Granger. His role is not that is mainly positive; he fills the halls of Hogwarts with a sense of security. Dumbledore’s overall character is one that presents hopefulness and love, while Lord Voldemort only instills fear and causes both emotional and physical turmoil. His entire existence throughout the series only serves to cause problems for everyone.
