Historical fiction novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, has many several themes throughout the text, one of the themes being self-identity. John Knowles gives examples of identity as one of the themes throughout this book by the words, actions, and the thoughts of the characters. Self-identity is expressed in different types of quotes as well as what the characters do and say. The one of the ways Gene presented in the theme is when he put on Finny’s clothes while Finny was injured and in the hospital. He said “I decided to put on his clothes.
