Humans are selfish creatures, and they like to take the easy going, less active route when it comes to things in life. Gregor was causing them a significant amount of stress that they even thought they needed to get rid of him. “We can’t all work as hard as we have to...we can’t endure it” (55). Likewise when he died, it was not a heart breaking. In fact, the father stated, “let’s give thanks to that” (59). It should also be stated that his family did not even give him a funeral, and just had the charwoman dispose of him. After his loss of life, his family went on to cherish Grete which is pushing them back into the routine of everyday life which happened before Gregor’s transformation. “As if in confirmation of their new dreams and good intentions, as they reached their new destination” (62).
In conclusion, Gregor demonstrated the fall of mankind, the value of life, and the selfishness of humans through his death. Gregor’s life was a typical, boring one before his conversion; he was often caught up in a routine like his peers. After his transformation, Gregor’s life changed dramatically but not for the better. In the end, humans need to learn to better their lives and break away from the social
