After seeing his ex-wife Julian for the first time in twenty years, a spark of hope seems to awaken inside of Theo. Something he thought he had forgotten for good, had once again awaken. By accepting to help his ex-wife, this behavior reveals to us that Theo lived longing for Julian’s love. In other words, all this time that Theo lived by himself he still longed for a reconciliation between him and his wife. In the movie Theo seems to have mixed feelings and he asks Julian, you seemed to be happy as if you have forgotten everything we have gone through. Julian replies to him that she had not forgotten anything but she had learned to live with it. Theo first loses his son, however he not only loses his son, he also loses himself. He felt that the world ended for him, his soul becomes so vulnerable that his wife leaves him. By losing his wife, he not only lost the chance of love but he also lost a person that helped constitute his life. When Theo reunites with Julian, she brought a chance of hope back to his life. After many years of bareness, Theo feels alive again for the first time. However, Julian is shot, Theo tries saving her but she dies. Losing Julian for the second time made Theo realize that hope would never be part of his life. For him Julian’s death symbolized that death is the only next step left in this world. Further in the movie, Theo loses his best friend Jasper. We see how Jasper death hits Theo very hard because for years Jasper was Theo’s main sustenance. Jasper was the person that brought some meaning to Theo’s life, he was like his salvation. Even though Jasper has gone through many dreadful situations in his life, he appears to be happy and hopeful. When Jasper is murdered by the Fishes, Theo seems devastated because for the second time he has lost an attachment that brought meaning and hope to his life. However not everyone that came in contact with the Kee opted for the well-being of her and her baby. The Fishes saw Kee’s baby as an object, similar to a flag, that would give them power to overthrow the government. Syd saw the sign of dollars and a better living by handing Kee and Theo to the Fishes. However, Theo and other people saw Kee’s baby as a spark of light and hope that would change the future. For example, Miriam the midwife got herself in danger, to get the attention of the police men on her and not at Kee. After Marika saw the truth intentions of Syd, she managed to get Kee, the baby and Theo to safety, by putting her life in danger of getting shot by Syd. After saving Kee from Luke, Kee’s baby begins crying. The people around them reached their hands out to touch the baby, a woman begins to sing a lullaby, and the gunfire seized. The people became a barrier to keep Kee, the baby and their savior safe. Here we see how a baby can become the salvation of humanity. At the end Theo ends up dying but he dies in piece knowing that he had saved a new life that represented humanities salvation.
Theo it’s a man that at first seems lost in a deep depression and melancholic suffrage, however the pregnancy of a girl and the last encounter with his wife, brought a spark hope and chance for a new life, to his lost soul. In this story we can see how a single person
