Septys’ characters grow through all different types of emotions, but how they grow the most is through grief. Throughout the entire book, Jonna keeps a strong face on. She shows other people how strong they can be by just trying their best. Joanna deals with the most in the book. She has been away from her family the longest and yet she is expected to take care of everyone. She is the mother figure for many small kids and everyone looks up to her. Even though she isn't that old, only in her early twenties, Florian talks about how mature she looks. They look up to her because they see courage in her face. Joanna was always there for all of the characters especially Emilia. She always would be right by Emilia's side. "Whenever [Joanna] left, she would return quickly" (Septys, 246) The saying "fake it till you make it", applies to courage and hope.
