The Theme Of Honor In The Physician's Tale

Decent Essays
Furthermore, "The Physician's Tale", is a story in which the main characters represent moral extremes. For example, Virginia, daughter of the knight Virginius, is described as pure and beautiful. However, Apius, a powerful judge, cares only to satisfy his own desires. The young girl is faced with death or dishonor when the judge demands she be handed over to him. Virginia's father would rather preserve his daughter's nobility and honor then keep her alive. Chaucer casts a negative light across the codes of honor to which men adhere. Overall, the tale has a moral allegory, when the girl chooses death over shame because of her father.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is particularly a book about suffering brought on by the idea of honor and shame. For many, the word honor may mean high respect but to Islam, honor is “guarded, granted protection, and placed in its proper position that deserves protection and glorification” because, in the Islam religion, honor is one of the five necessities of life. So it makes sense, that in a book containing the Islam religion, honor and shame are important, and coincidentally, the reason for many rash decisions in the novel.…

On the basis of entertainment and lesson-teaching, it is not difficult to see which tale in The Canterbury Tales is the best. Each pilgrim journeying to Canterbury tells their own story with a lesson and a bit of entertainment, and their stories reflect their actions and personalities. “The Pardoner’s Tale,” “The Wife of Bath’s Tale,” and “The Miller’s Tale” represent their storytellers while capturing the attention of the reader. However, only one of the tales has the strongest lesson and the most balanced amount of entertainment. “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” rises above the other stories in terms of lesson-teaching and entertainment because it demonstrates a revolutionary lesson while resisting the urge of being too obscene or too hypocritical like the other two tales.…

Ownership of the women, as well as revoking their right to speech create characters that allow for no sympathy from the reader or from other character’s within the tale. Traditional gender roles create a patriarchal effect that constitutes women to be of lesser value when compared to me, as well as allows for a double standard of acceptation for men and no acceptance for women in many social ways. In addition, the Reeve tells a story where both Malyne and Symkyn’s wife have a romanticized and comical encounter with Alayn and John, rather than rape. In Chaucer’s “The Reeve’s Tale” the usage of these demeaning, sexist views create the essence that women are subordinate to men in this tale and that it is…

Chaucer uses his three male characters to highlight different stereotypes and can also be used to depict the direction Chaucer uses to portray women, or at least feminine characters. The most questionable scene to focus on is the ending, as it is arguably what makes “The Miller’s Tale” fabliaux. Absolon’s actions of striking Nicholas on the butt with a red-hot poker becomes funny, but why? Is it the homosexuality reference made? If so, gender roles and stereotypes become significant for the three males and how they are viewed in…

Helen Rocha Per.2 SAHC:HR By looking at the Knight's and Miller's Tale in Geoffrey Chaucer's work of fiction Canterbury Tales 1476, one can see the distinctions between love and lust, and the tragic and comic endings desire, temptation, and ones emotional necessities may lead the human mind to. The Knight who portrays humorous aristocracy among pilgrims, introduces a courtly love tale that represents his social class. The Miller on the contrary represents the middle class in Medieval England, and coveys a fabliau tale, completely distinct from the Knight's tale. Both tales introduce the conventions of romance, and upshot of desire. While one tale engages on a spiritual meaningful convention of love, the other engages in sexual drive and the humiliation lechery may bring to ones table for the rest of their living.…
