An Exemplarity Friendship
Throughout the world, friends often look to each other for support and reassurance. Within the book The Chosen, by Chaim Potok, two boys grow up together and experience friendship first hand. This book tells a story about a boy, Reuven, who meets another boy called Danny. Despite their different religions, Reuven lives as an Orthodox Jew and Danny and his father follow Hasidic Judaism, both Reuven and Danny defy the odds, and become best friends. According to Merriam Webster, a person portrays friendly qualities when they help or support someone. Throughout the story, friendship exists between Reuven and Danny when they show support for one another, affection towards each other, and stand up for what they believe.
To begin, Reuven and Danny’s friendship grows when they show support for one another. Many times people show support by confiding in their friends and standing with them. In the story, soon after becoming friends, Reuven finds out Danny does not want to become a rabbi like his father. Later Danny confides in Reuven and explains when he talks to his father, “I’ll want you around on that day, friend. I’ll need you around on that day” (202).
