This is an important symbol in the novel because the Ronnie uses the turtles as an escape from her dad. When the baby turtles start hatching one by one Steve is on his way to watch and he suddenly collapses. This is when Ronnie finds out about her father's illness. As the turtles hatch it's as though Ronnie is suddenly cracking and breaking down too. This is when she completely changes her perspective on her family and forgives her father. “We are not perfect. She blames herself for most of what happened, even telling Will, “I was so mean to him. I quit the piano! I blamed him for everything, and I didn’t say more than a few words to him for three years! Three years! And I can’t get those years back. But maybe if I hadn’t been so angry, he might not have gotten sick. Maybe I caused that extra… stress that did all this. Maybe it was me!” pg 307. Her younger brother Jonah even blamed Ronnie in a state of shock “you were obsessed with your stupid turtles and stupid boyfriend you never paid attention, I was with him every day” pg 358. Ronnie has a beautiful musical gift that she gave up when her dad left. She decides to start playing again in order to gain what she has lost over the years. As she stays with her dad through his final months she says,“I finished your song, she said. Our last song.” pg 412. This is when Ronnie finally forgives herself. Forgiveness is not easy you have to forgive yourself to forgive others. Ronnie demonstrates this throughout the whole novel proving that it an important theme. Nicholas Sparks has presented this theme in many ways in this novel, making it a reoccurring theme. “A story about family, first loves, second chances, and the moments in life that leads you back home”- Nicholas
