In other words, disgrace is what Brother felt towards doodle. Brother had to take Doodle everywhere he went. For example, Brother would take Doodle to places in a cart by pulling him along with him, which his father made since Doodle could not walk. On the other hand, Brother behaved heartless most times. He took Doodle to the barn loft and showed him his coffin that was made for him. He forced Doodle to touch the coffin threatening he would leave him. After touching the box, Doodle was paralyzed because of fear of being alone. As they left the barn loft, Doodle clung to him, crying, "Don't leave me. Don't leave me". Having said that, when Doodle turned five, Brother was embarrassed of having a brother that couldn't walk. Brother would take Doodle to Old Woman Swamp because of eagerness to teach him how to walk. A heavy, dreadful storm came that evening. As Doodle and Brother run back home, Brother runs ahead not bothering to look back because of anger and frustration of wanting Doodle to be normal and depend on himself.
