Aging In A Short Story

Every stories take place in “time” to some extent. In this essay, I would like to focus on “aging” as a theme of all three stories which are Eveline, Moons of Jupiter and A Village After Dark. What is aging that I refer to? Aging is the period that describe as a later part in human life and it could be referred to the passage of time that characters have gone through in their early stage as well. Aging plays an important role in these stories. This analysis would show how the aging or the changes of time affects the character's decision as well as character’s personality among three different stories. From Eveline story, we can see clearly that aging father affect her decision. Actually, she decided to go to Buenos Ayres with her lover names Frank. She said that “now she was going to go away like the others, to leave her home.” However, she realised that right now her father was old, so he could no longer use his physical strength to threaten her anymore. In fact, he sometimes treated her well. Eveline said “her father was becoming old lately, sometimes he could be very nice. He had read her out a ghost story and made toast for her at the fire when she had been laid up for a day.” Another possible reason for Eveline decided to stay with her father might be because he is old now. This statement can apply to my life as well. What I am today does not mean that I am going to remain the same throughout the rest of my life. I will definitely change from what I am today. As we grew up, our way of thinking became more mature. It might because what we have learned in the past shape the way we think. We knew that once we made a mistake, we will try not to repeat the same mistake again in the future. This factor helps our life to grow up.
