The Prize of Eternal Love
Famous English author William Shakespeare once stated that “the course of true love never did run smooth”. This quote implies that in every relationship, there are obstacles that need to be overcome. Many couples fail to cross these hurdles, but those that do take pride in the fact that they have found true love. Everyone in his or her journey of life is in constant pursuit of finding eternal love, including the character Janie Crawford from the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. At the age of sixteen, her witnessing of the embrace between the flowers and the bees under a pear tree causes Janie to begin her quest for finding true love. Although she fails to achieve this dream of eternal love from her first two marriages with Logan Killicks and Joe Starks, she finally finds happiness with her third husband, Tea Cake. Not only does he treat her with respect, but Tea Cake also rarely expresses dominance over her. Throughout the novel, the author Zora Neale Hurston demonstrates that Tea Cake is a positive influence in Janie’s life because upon meeting Tea Cake, Janie grows from a docile and …show more content…
His actions of teaching Janie to play checkers and to use a gun have helped her find her voice in her marriage. Janie’s story indicates that in order to have a happy marriage, both the husband and the wife need to treat each other with respect and equality regardless of their gender roles. In the real world, many marriages end in divorce because many men and women fail to see this fact; however, those who do ignore their gender roles and treat each other with respect end up having a blissful marriage. True love does not come easily, but those who do find their eternal love are granted the ultimate prize: the development of independence and strength within
