They begin their own voyage growing closer to themselves and together while growing further from their previous ways of living in the society of Equality. Through their exploration they find a home from the “Unmentionable Times” and instantly know that it will be their home. At the house they find many new things that change their ways of thinking. They find a mirror that shows them a person that they have never seen before. This represented finding themselves and supported the overlying theme of individualism. Finding books and the word “I” represents the beginning of self-recognition.
Anthem begins with the introduction of a timid, unmotivated, outcast within a society lead by collectivism. He begins by saying, “It is a sin to write this” (17). He feels guilty for his sins against society. By the end of the novel Equality 7-2521 has become somebody entirely different.
