The competing belief systems that occur around Antonio are the drives behind his confusion and misunderstanding. On one hand he has his mother and her deep rooted beliefs towards God and the Virgin Mary. Then on the other, there is Ultima and his dad who do not seem to fall into this religious box. These competing views towards life seem to have a toll on Antonio and his everyday interactions. Throughout most of the book, Antonio explains his uncertainty when it comes to religion and following in his mother's steps.…

As a new life begins it also gradually starts to follow death. As distinguished in the novel, East of Eden, death is perceived in many ways, which often dictates one's approach to life because some individuals approach death with a practical view while others have an idealistic view on death. McCarthy in The Road and Trethewey in Native Guard both struggle with the ambiguity of legacy after death, searching for a purpose in mortality and for a way to entwine one’s existence with the rest of history to create progress. However, McCarthy, writing about the apocalypse in The Road, does not specifically focus on the mortality of humans, but the mortality of morality itself, the slow death of the goodness of people. Each author deals with the concept of legacy after death--McCarthy with a father’s noble sacrifice for humanity’s redemption and Trethewey with her mother’s murder and the forgotten history of the Native Guards--to demonstrate two concepts: the prevalence of mortality and the fragility of legacy as it is completely dependent on the memories and acknowledgement of others. Essentially, death is a journey.…

He became aware of the influence the deaths he had witnessed were having on him, and he was able to use this to aid in his maturation. Take, for example, his reaction to the death of Ultima, someone who he was incredibly close with. At first Antonio was saddened by the death of Ultima, and he cried over her, acknowledging that “warm tears” streamed down his face (261). However, rather than running off to be alone and grieving over what he had witnessed, as he had with the other deaths, Antonio stood at Ultima’s side while she was dying. He also had the sense to ask for her blessing, an act that showed Antonio’s growth into a cognizant adult.…

Epicurus, Lucretius, and Nagel are philosophers with very different views on death, and whether death is bad for the person who dies. Their understanding of life and what happens when it ceases, is the distinguishing factor. Epicurus was a philosopher who understood the universe and life as being composed of matter in the form of small particles. He stated that when one dies, the particles which make up our existence dissolve and our consciousness comes to an end. He considers what he understands to be mental and physical pain and pleasures to determine the various aspects of life.…
