Oedipus’s wife, Jocasta, hangs herself and Oedipus attempts to poke his eyes out. The theme of suicide occurs in today’s society. Every day in the United States, people are killing themselves because they go through situations that they cannot handle. People commit suicide because of financial issues, being bullied, or losing a loved one. Suicide seems to be more common in the United States because a lot of individuals, including children, uses suicide as an option to escape from a certain situation. Oedipus blinds himself because he is confronted with the horrific truth. Sophocles uses suicide in the play as a way of showing readers how the characters are weak in the play. Characters in the play are not able to face their challenges. This situation in the play is similar to the situation that we have in the United States. People are not able to face the horrific truth because it does not fulfill their expectations of what they look for in life. Individuals in society are not accustomed to failure or tragedy. Individuals in modern society fail to realize that life is not something he or she can see through a clear glass. We expect our life to be perfect, however it is not. Having a pivotal role in society shapes some people into an arrogant, selfish person. Having a person in power can either help or destroy the country. The decisions and choices of our authority leaders such as the concern of politics, healthcare, and laws can affect the world as a whole. In our country, power is chosen over everything. Having a small role in something can affect our behavior. For example, a child can be elected as hall monitor and he or she begins to take their job too serious and abuse some of their power. Our arrogance and abuse of power not only affects the world, but it can affect us as well. Certain authority leaders, such as Adolf Hitler, uses his power as a crutch for destroying the Jewish population. His wicked intentions benefits him rather than the world.
