The Book Thief takes place in World War II, and is about a girl named Liesel. Liesel is girl who has trouble reading and eventually gets help from her foster dad (Hans). Once she learns how to read she begins to take books on unexpected occasions. The book is narrated by Death, which allows the book to have a third person and a first person point of view. However, because the the point of view keeps interchanging throughout the book, it allows the book to be more interesting.
Markus Zusak needed a narrator who would give “snapshots” of the war outside of Himmel Street. Which could be a reason as to of why Zusak choose to use death as the narrator. Death tells the story throughout the third person limited, which lets us somewhat connect to death.
