Explain the Theme of Courage in the Novel
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee, published in 1960, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the 1930’s in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. During this time, the Great Depression was in effect, which resulted in many people being poor and having to deal with poverty; many still showed courage to overcome this difficult time. Courage is one of the main themes in this novel and is portrayed in the characters Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose and Atticus. Courage is the quality of mind that enables a person to overcome fear, to face difficulty or pain, or danger. Courage is illustrated through the characters of Atticus, Mrs.Dubose, and Boo Radley. In this novel, these characters are brave despite the difficult experiences that they face. Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published five years after the Civil Rights Movement began. Writing this novel would take courage; it is interesting to note that she shares that personality trait with the characters she creates in To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee accepted the risk of being judged, but wrote and published her novel anyway, knowing it presents an important lesson to be learned. This novel is still relevant today; although we are aware of racial issues, we have not, perhaps, evolved far enough yet to truly put these aside. Race riots in America, fear of Muslims, the fear of a terrorist attack on a different way of life - until we truly see each other as equals regardless of colour, race, creed or religion, Lee’s novel will continue to try to help readers “climb into [someone else’s] skin and walk around in
