Continuity and Change over Time Essay

The things I have ascertained crucial in this life are: God, Family, health, and happiness. God has touched my life in more ways than one, and through his word I build my foundation. From the very beginning my family has lead me in the path of Christianity. I couldn’t ask for a better family even though it’s not the “average”. They, as well as my friends, always know how to make me happy. I’m also very thankful to participate in a vigorous and thrilling activity with almost all of them. Unfortunately, things on this earth can’t stay “perfect”, but if some things didn't change I wouldn't be the person I am today.
My religion has always played a major role in my life and continues to do so. However, before

Because of that situation my grandfather had always felt like a father to me, and it helped that he lived just around the corner with my grandmother. October 3rd of last year hit us out of nowhere, as my grandfather went to be with the Lord. He had always put the needs of others before himself and did whatever he needed to make it easier for everyone else. Ever since he passed i’ve tried to be more like him and have the characteristics he had.
Joining marching band also helped me when going through the loss of my grandfather. Before this activity I wasn’t as mature and self disciplined as I am now. It has pushed and encouraged me to do my best every single day no matter what i'm doing. I’m also surrounded by people who have the same passion, and are a part of the team. Everyone in band is a part of the band family and we help each other out along the way.
In conclusion, if it wasn’t for the things i've been through already I wouldn't be the same. So many things I’ve already encountered have changed my life, and encouraged me to strive for my best every day. I hope to continue and gain positive characteristics along the way. I also hope to help and make a difference in people's lives. I strongly believe everything happens for a reason, and I wouldn’t change anything for the

When I saw the flyer for color guard my eighth-grade year I was perplexed as it didn't specify what color guard was other than an exciting activity that lets you be apart of marching band. I was skeptical that I would actually like color guard but at the first clinic, I knew I had found a family and exciting activity to pursue. Watching the upperclassmen toss rifles, sabers, and flags with such ease and confidence made me excited to learn and achieve that level of confidence. This year will be my fourth year in marching band, I am still in Color Guard and it is easily one of the activities I’m most passionate about. My love to perform on the marching field takes away the anxiety I usually have, throughout the years my confidence has risen…

On an ordinary day, around 4:45 pm, I, Matthew Watson entered society as an innocent and delicate infant destined to inherit this world. Full of life and energy, but, in desperate need of care, I was greeted with unconditional love from two enduring individuals, who had persevered through the trials of life: my parents. I can only imagine what I felt during these times. Being constantly under watchful and careful eyes, having utmost attention, and most importantly living a happy, simple life were all commodities that I enjoyed. However, this would come to a halt as the power of the sin of man and woman overwhelmed my family.…

I hate marching band. Leaving that trap of a class was the best decision I made in my entire high school experience. Once I had had enough of band, I joined theater. Joining theater fit my schedule well, introduced me to new people, and opened my mind to possibilities I hadn't considered before. The time I wasted in marching band was grueling.…

While my college colleagues filled bookshelves with James Patterson novels, my library was quite different. The Tale of the Dueling Nuerosurgens, by Daniel Levitin and Sam Kean sat atop my bedroom dresser. When I learned my aunt was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, I turned through the tear-stained pages and found out that she was in battle against her own brain. Mid 2012, I experienced an event that altered my entire life when my aunt, Kulbir Kaur, at the age of 28, was announced dead after taking her own life. I was enrolled as a student at California State University of East Bay at the time and on my visits back home, I could not understand why staying in a church with only a thin curtain separating her from an elderly priest seemed more appealing…

Marching band is something that has influenced me to work hard in and of the classroom. It has taught me that hard work does not always get you what you want, the execution of what you know is a big part to show what you have learned. For example, this year our marching band attended Grand Nationals in Indianapolis and we had a great performance. Out of the 95 bands, 34 bands made it to semi-finals. We placed 35th and we were .05 out of semi-finals.…

The Montour Spartan Marching Band has been with me through my four years of high school. The band was my first step into freshmen year, and I would not be the same person today without my experiences in marching band. To me, marching band means coming together as a family, and that will continue to hold true through my future experiences in Mercyhurst’s Marching Band. At its core, our marching band is one big family.…

I would like to participate in the BOLD summer camp because in my biology class this school year my class and I learned about cancer cells, and I want to learn more about cancer because I find the subject of cancer very fascinating. It is very interesting how a simple mutation during cell division can cause a rogue cell with its own agenda. It seems like something from a movie. I was fascinated at how a cancer cell is essentially immortal because it ignores signals for cell death, and proceeds to live on.…

Many people define themselves based on what they do or are a part of. For some, their identity comes from the sport they play. Others may use academics to describe who they are. In a way, I believe they are right using those things to help create an identity for themselves, but I think it’s more than just one group that makes any who they are. Everything we do, or have done, was essential in creating who we become.…

On February 28, 1997, my grandfather and my role model, Jimmie Gray, passed away. He had been sick for a very long time, but he never wanted the family to know. The night that he passed away, I remember listening to his music, reminiscing on all the good times. My grandfather would always tell me, “We don’t want a mumbling doctor in the family.” He always motivated me to be confident about who I was, and when he passed away, I knew that God was passing me the baton.…
