This obviously put some stress on the couple and their relationship once more. Lexie gave birth to a healthy child but didn’t survive after giving birth. Jeremy had a new baby to take care of after losing his wife. While dealing with the events his thoughts overwhelmed him, “How could he ever love her? How could he forgive her? How could he see her or hold her and forget that she’d taken Lexie’s life in exchange for her own? How was he not supposed to hate her for what she had done to the woman he loved? (257) Jeremy is having these incredibly immoral thoughts about his new baby girl; he doesn’t think he can take care of her with what happened to Lexie. Eventually these thoughts fade and he holds Claire, his daughter, for the first time. “Suddenly certain that what he was doing now was the sole reason he’d been placed on this earth. To love another. And in that instant he fell in love and wanted nothing more than to hold Claire and keep her safe forever.” (263) Jeremy overcame all of his negative thoughts and decided to be the father Lexie knew he could be. The couple was engaged waiting to get married, buying a new house that needed renovations, buying a car, getting ready for a baby, and still maintaining a career. Jeremy struggled with his writing career after moving to Boone Creek; he was blocked and didn’t write anything in months. Along with his writer’s block, he had some financial worries as well with the new house, car, and renovations. One day Jeremy finally thought he had enough, “He shook his head, tired of his troubles with Lexie, tired of wedding plans and house renovations, tired of not being able to write.” (121) In this event the author shows us that Jeremy is tired of dealing with all of the responsibilities that came with his new marriage. After everything settled down and Jeremy was able to write again, everything was great for the couple. They had some troubles and stressors in the beginning, but they helped each other get through it.
