The production of “Twelfth Night” has one interesting point, which is, all characters would be played by females. I noticed the theme of the show presented the gender identity and sexual conflict. This is the first time I watched the theatre production contains all female actors. It is not easy for female to perform a male character. They must spend so much time to understand the plot and male identity. Thus, it can entertain audiences with unprecedented character even if the character of female disguise to be male is confused the audiences to distinguish the particular character that the actor would have to present. I also feel much appreciated all actors can pretend the characters that might be unfamiliar. Based on the plot of this production, Viola has to disguise as a man in order to hide herself from other people after she lost her twin brother. She was the servant of Duke Orsino with the new name “Cesario.” Her new life as a man under the service of Duke Orsino becomes the main point of this story. The confliction of gender identity within the characters of Viola and Cesario occurs. She falls in love Duke Orsino, and Orsino falls in love to Olivia, and Olivia falls in love to Duke Orsino. Their relationships are similar to triangle and so complicated. Because Olivia does not know that Cesario is actually female, she tried to marry Cesario. Until the emergence of Sebastian, Viola’s twin brother, the secret of Viola disguise a male is disclosing. The mistake identity of gender is confused all …show more content…

Also, she was surprised and scared when Sir Toby announced that there would be a duel that involved “him.” In the movie, Viola had no duels, but she had a hard time acting like a man. She would constantly repeat her phrases to make it sound more man-like. “What does your heart tell you?…

William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night alludes to a variety of themes that commonly include false identity, role-playing, and love. The general plot of the play could be described as a cross-dressing comedy about a woman, Viola, who tries to gain the attention and love of a Duke, Orsino, with obstacles along the way, including Olivia, the Duke’s love interest. The themes mentioned are developed and sometimes scrutinized by the play’s characters, such as Orsino, Olivia, and Feste the clown. In particular, the progression of the beginning of III, i expand upon the themes through a conversation between Viola and Feste, also referred to as Clown. Through a quick reading of this part of the scene, a reader might view the conversation as further characterization…

Shakespeare repeatedly challenges social structure through twisting traditional gender roles in Twelfth Night with the twin characters, Viola and Sebastian. Shakespeare has complicated the gender roles between Viola and Sebastian by cloaking Viola as male, not only through her dialogue (and Sebastian’s as well) but through her persona. Shakespeare chooses this idea in his writing to flow the characterization of these two perplexing individuals who washed up on shore and focused on their arrival to Illyria. From the beginning of Twelfth Night when Viola discovers Illyria to when Sebastian is rescued by an intrigued sailor and brought to Illyria, both characters use expression in their dialogue that don’t fit their gender stereotypes to exaggerate…

    Twelfth Night Deception

I think one of the central points in Twelfth Night is to show that appearances aren’t really what they seem. Basically what Shakespeare’s construct expresses is that appearances can be deceptive in a way that we can understand. Deception in appearances is showed throughout Twelfth Night. The first is Olivia and Duke Orsino being deceived by Viola disguising as a male. An example of this is from the quote, “There is a fair behaviour in thee, captain; And though that nature with a beauteous wall Doth oft close on pollution, yet of thee I believe thou hast a mind that suits.…

When she uncovers her true character and reveals it to Orsino, he still declares hislove for her: “Boy, thou hast said to me a thousand times/Thou never shouldst love woman like to me” (IV.i.279-280). He addresses her as a boy, but later asks to see her in “women’s weeds” (IV.i.286). The uncertainty of her gender goes to prove that gender doesn’t matter when it comes to true love. Orsino loves Viola when she is disguised as a boy and continues to love her when she identifies herself as a woman. The same feelings apply to Olivia, when Sebastian comes to Illyria.…

William Shakespeare’s play, Twelfth Night, is a romantic comedy in which the central characters go through the struggles of unrequited love in a humourous and melodramatic fashion. One of the main reasons for such struggles is the use of disguise by one of the parties involved, namely Viola. In Viola’s dramatic soliloquy, found in lines 14-41 of Act 2 scene 2, Shakespeare employs tone, diction, and literary devices, such as personification, to explain how her disguise has conjured up conflict in the form of a complicated love triangle. At the beginning of this passage, the tone seems to be one of confusion as Viola tries to make sense of what had happened with Malvolio and the ring.…

As Viola cannot show her love for Orsino, the only way she can express them is in her soliloquies to the audience, this contributes to the dramatic ironies. I believe dramatic irony certainly adds to the magic of Twelfth Night. The disguise also causes mistaken identity, an example of this is when Sir Andrew goes looking for Cesario, finds who he thinks is Cesario, strikes him, the person however is, Sebastian. Sebastian hits him in return, but sevenfold, and Sebastian having been in Illyria only a few days is proposed to by a beautiful lady and is hit by a man he had never seen before, "are all the people mad" Sebastian says. This is an extremely funny series of events started by the disguise of one single woman.…
