Negative Teachers

Some believe teachers are extremely positive and overly peppy, others believe teachers are negative people that do not care about their students. I have also learned, a lot of these viewpoints come from the media by over exaggerating a teacher’s role or not giving them enough credit. Although I do believe teachers are positive people and do many great things for students, I do understand not all teachers have the same enthusiasm. I chose to talk about “Freedom Writers”, this movie is based off of a true story and the teacher (Erin Gruwell) does many great things for her students. For instance, she inspires them, uses many teaching strategies and goes above and beyond to ensure her students success. Erin Gruwell inspires her students to realize there is more to life than gangs and they all of them has the option to graduate and go to college. She does this by asking questions and even relating gangs to the Nazi and the Holocaust. Next, Gruwell uses many teaching strategies; some of her teaching strategies include, giving the class an opportunity to meet a holocaust survivor. She also has her students write in journals and encourages them to think for themselves. Lastly, Erin Gruwell goes through many complications, but she still pushes her students and goes above and beyond. At one point in the movie, a student feels like he deserves an F; Gruwell does not take this as an acceptable answer and has a stern conversation with him. She explains she will do anything she can to make him pass, even go to his house every night until his homework is finished. Also, some teachers would not try to change their class and give up on them after the first try; but Gruwell kept pushing and went above and beyond for her students to succeed (LaGravense

The rationale behind much of this writing is that pedagogic problems in our cities are not chiefly matters of injustice, inequality, and segregation. Curiosity Leadership takes many forms. In the case of Dawoud, leadership emerges from his curiosity. The way that this dynamic works is that Dawoud’s internal sense of curiosity creates opportunities for him to engage with his students, to probe their minds and to draw important questions and insights from them. Thus, their own curiosity is awakened and the process of discovery, learning and development continues. Dawoud’s story resonated with me.…

I was set for failure. Mrs. Novatny is a good example of what a teacher should not be like towards her students. Racial Bias in the Classroom Throughout my life, I have experienced inequity because of my heritage and the color of my skin. For example, my 10th grade English teacher demonstrated inequity by having prejudice against some of her students, as she was biased towards any nationality other than her own, which was black. The treatment that I and other people in the same situation received was unfair, as teachers are not supposed to give special treatment towards their own race. They should know to accept students’ differences in nationality.…

The American Education System is considered to be ranked 36th in the world wide ranks of education systems as of 2013 (Coleman). This ranking indicates that there is a major problem with the American Education System. Though many people believe that reform must come in the form of larger budgets this is not the case, money actually does not have a direct link with student performance (Robinson). The reform for the American Education System needs to come in the form of teachers with more will and want to help, focusing on the true needs of students and shifting the focus from testing to real learning. From the start, teachers have had one of the biggest impacts on a student’s education experience.…

Every person who has been through schooling can think of a teacher who made a positive, life changing impact on them who allowed his/her students to think creatively, openly, clearly, and driven. Flash back to a time during your childhood and think of the best/worst teachers you ever had. What qualities did your teachers possess or lack that made them good or bad?
