Cocaine is a stimulant that powerfully affects the body and brain. Cocaine has dated back thousands of years when it was chewed and ingested. In the 1900s, most medicines contained cocaine hydrochloride, which is an ingredient of cocaine. This was before doctors and scientists realized the effects of cocaine. People would take the antidote they were subscribed and would realize a need for the drug cocaine. It was not viewed badly nor illegal back then. Cocaine originated in South America, Peru, and Bolivia and is a very popular illegal drug in the U.S. today. The short-term effects of this drug is dilated pupils, increase temperature, higher heart rate, blood pressure, decrease of fatigue, and mental clarity. An addicted person also feels restless, irritable, and has great amounts of anxiety. Right after a druggie uses he or she feels energized and has some mental clarity. This only lasts up to thirty minutes if snorted. If smoked, it only lasts up to ten minutes. This drug does not last long and people feel a “crash” causing anger, depression, and fatigue. They also feel very sick and only feel better when they have their next dose. This is a never ending cycle for an addicted person unless they get help. They feel bad about themselves when using, but feel worse when they do not use. Long-term effects are similar to short-term effects. After a person uses cocaine for a while, they feel aggressive and angry. Most have visons of things that are not there and have paranoia. Most people withdraw for a short time then go back to snorting. They cannot live with the feeling of anger and anxiety. The only feel better when they are smoking or snorting. Afterwards they feel bad about themselves until they get their next fix. In Ohio, cocaine is an illegal drug that effects 1.9 million people a month. Adults that are ages 18-25 have a higher rate cocaine abuse. Men statistically, use cocaine more than woman. At least 36 million children twelve and older use cocaine today. This is a problem in our country that is trying to be addressed. Places like the Ohio Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Columbus and LAPP in licking country help addicted people become clean. These programs can last as long as needed until someone is physically and mentally better
