Tenth of December is a collection of short stories by George Saunders. In Tenth of December, Saunders uses the theme of selflessness and sacrifice for others in multiple stories. Saunders shows this theme multiple times with a transformation of a character in which he/she ultimately acts in a selfless manner, often at a cost to him/herself. “Escape from Spiderhead” and the title story, “Tenth of December” both demonstrate this. “Escape from Spiderhead” is about a man named Jeff who is convicted of a crime, and as a result is sent to an experimental prison.…

The memory of September 15th, 1963 is still persistently clawing at my consciousness, every day reminding me of how grateful I am to be alive. Although, I would have never guessed that I would still remember every waking detail so clearly nearly 14 years later. I often catch myself waking up in a pool of sweat feeling the heat radiating off of my scarred skin from the previous years of nightmares. Every now and then I can even smell the burning of my flesh as i did for weeks upon weeks after the incident. Nevertheless the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing was a tragedy and it is truly a shame that me and all of Birmingham, Alabama had to wait 14 years for justice.…

Think of some of the worst people in the history of the world. For example, think of the Nazi’s - there have been several stories of Nazi’s helping Jewish people escape from torture, which is sympathy from some of the worst people in the world. In the Science Fiction novel The Ender’s Game written by Orson Scott Card, the main character Ender Wiggins perfectly portrays this because of his mix of violence that he gets from his brother and his innocence that he gets from his sister.. One important theme from the novel is that everyone shows sympathy and has feelings about certain situations and people, but some people show it more than others because a number of different factors such as genetics or their environment.…
