He was given many temptations to make the deal, such as his horrible wife being murdered and him being told he could have wealth. Near the end of the end of the story he is taken by The Devil because he made the deal for his soul. The Devil and Tom Walker is the best example of romanticism. The Devil and Tom Walker shows the tenets of romanticism that are Nature is a form of spirituality, all fantastic creatures of medieval popular, and interest in things outside the realm of normal and rational.
