Nothing that you can hold, but everything that it is Ten thousand” These words of Macklemore were inspired by Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers. In the novel Gladwell argues that in order to become successful one needs to put in 10,000 hours of practice. Through discussing The Beatles, Mozart, and Bill Gates Gladwell has turned the ten thousand hour rule into a common statement, but he may have simplified the rule. While Mozart’s compositions were not popular until after he had his ten thousand hours of practice in, the ten rule is not accurate because it is inapplicable to certain …show more content…
For example in music practice made a 26% difference, while in education practice only made a 4% difference (Baer 4). This can be attributed to how stable the fields are. In fields like music, where how to play the instrument never changes, people can practice to become successful in that field. In fields like education, where the material is always changing, practice makes little to know difference in how successful one will become. In Outliers, Gladwell simplifies the ten thousand hour rule to make it seem as if it works for every field, meanwhile this is far from true. Practice only takes you so far in certain …show more content…
The author remarks, “Mozart, he argues, ‘developed late,’ since he didn’t produce his greatest work until he had been composing for twenty years” (41). At this point in the chapter Gladwell is now arguing that even child prodigies need their ten thousand hours to achieve true mastery. While this may be true of some prodigies, there appears to be a great amount of successful children who have become household names without reaching the ten thousand hour mark. One recent example could be Grace Vanderwaal, winner of America’s Got Talent. Vanderwaal is a singer and songwriter who was able to win the competition over many adults who had already put in their ten thousand hours. Vanderwaal is now going on a national tour of the United States, and has become a household name to many families. Although Mozart may not have had the same publicity that Vanderwaal was offered, she was still able to become successful without gaining those ten thousand hours. This can also be seen through Tatum O’Neal, the youngest person to win an Oscar. O’Neal was a mere ten years old when she won an award that took Leonardo Dicaprio six nominations to win. Most actors can only dream of winning an Oscar, while O’Neal had one under her belt. Similarly to Vanderwaal, O’Neal was also nominated against older candidates, most of which had well over ten thousand hours of practice
