Every eight years a new president gets elected in the United States. Two people fight over getting the most votes and then once that one person wins the overall election, they now have power over the whole Unites States. This is very similar to the play "The Tempest", written by Shakespeare. Throughout this play, the reader can see many attempts by the characters to establish their own form of rule. Próspero's brother having taken over the throne is a key catalyst that causes próspero to search for or create a new kind of kingdom/government. Próspero exhibits his control over Ariel and over Miranda in an attempt to feel more powerful. This is hypocritical of próspero since we know that he felt betrayed by his own brother for taking over control. …show more content…
On another level, Caliban is so grateful to the drunken butler Stephano for the glorious gift of liquor that he acknowledges him as his master and pledges to be his loyal subject only if he were to murder Prospero. Caliban lures him further by marriage to Miranda. Stephano and Trinculo fall for the bait and are humiliated. Their plan is foiled much in the same manner as the plan of Antonio and Sebastian to seize the kingdom of Naples by going away with Alonso. Caliban was fooled by Stephano and does not even notice it. However, Prospero feels free to forgive those who sinned against him only after he has emerged triumphant and has seen the men, now mournful and "penitent", pay for their transgressions. Further evidence to support the claim that Prospero’s quality of mercy is strained, and that a truly sincere reconciliation fails to develop, comes when Prospero finally confronts King Alonso, Sebastian, and Antonio and announces that he is the right Duke of Milan. Although power can take over everything, many can get harm or have tons of problems due to this. Being normal and just live life the way it is suppose to be will eventually do good in

After being deceived by his brother and cast away to an island, Prospero was able to apply his knowledge and gain experience. Caliban urges his comrades to “ first possess his books; for without he’s but a sot, as I am, nor hath not one spirit to command” (The Tempest, p.53). The strict tone of “first possess his books” exemplifies how Prospero gains the knowledge of magic from his books, but only when he applies his knowledge is he able to command spirits and pose a threat to Caliban. When Miranda and Ferdinand see each other for the first time they instantly fall in love and Prospero reveals, “It goes on, I see, as my soul prompts it” (The Tempest, p.23).…

Reading the assignments from the Elizabethan Era brought me great joy, mainly due to the fact that Shakespeare just makes me happy; I think this is actually the case with many people, they just don’t know it. My love of Shakespeare and his plays grew exponentially in high school when I had a teacher who brought her love for him into the classroom and opened our eyes to how modern he really is. This love reached all new heights when I traveled to London and saw Shakespeare Reduced performed live in traditional English fashion! Reading The Tempest had all of those memories flooding in. The Tempest includes all the best parts of Shakespeare’s work; there is humor, I laughed aloud when Prospero is telling Miranda of how they came to be on the island…

However, “Tempest” is Shakespeare’s last play and it is often believed that Prospero was a projection of Shakespeare. So, what if we read it that way? Perhaps through this comparison, Shakespeare shows the differences and similarities he had with his characters. Like Oberon, he was a leader: one that directed the entire play. He penned each event and situation that occurs and has full control which is why he is more authoritative in his leadership.…
