Caliban’s slavery → Handcuffs: The handcuffs were chosen to represent Prospero’s slavery of Caliban. Prospero had previously taught Caliban language, and other academic subjects, but was quickly forced into prisoner status when he tried to rape Miranda. By imprisoning Caliban, Prospero is ensuring Miranda’s safety from him, and even Miranda informs readers that she once tried to teach Caliban, and now voices her opinion about why he was confined to the cave.
Separating Ferdinand → Wooden Raft: When Prospero has Ariel separate Ferdinand from the others, it is not out of meanness, but rather to make sure that Ferdinand and Miranda eventually meet each other. The scepter is what originally brought Prospero and Miranda to the Island, as Prospero became engrossed in his magic, and neglected is political duties. The scepter also allows Prospero to exact his revenge on Alonso and the others,through spirits like Ariel, causing them to fall into a slumber, and The Tempest at the beginning of the play.
