Ariel In William Shakespeare's The Tempest

Title

Shakespeare 's last play, The Tempest, is a story about a magician named Prospero who creates a tempest to crash a boat of people on an island. With the help of his servant Ariel, he is able to perform magic, making sure no one on the boat was harmed. Prospero also has another servant (more like a slave), Caliban, who he treats maliciously. Caliban knew the island very well and after Prospero got all the island 's secrets from him, he sent Caliban out of his care, to a rock where he was fed scraps and worked hard to serve Prospero. All of these characters contain power of different levels and it is often discussed, who has the most of it. Ariel, a genderless ghost spirit, has power because s/he has magic. Prospero is powerful because

Prospero freed Ariel from an oak tree in which s/he was trapped by a witch named Sycorax (Caliban’s mother). Ariel is indebted to Prospero for freeing him as seen in the line, “Remember I have done thee worthy service/ Told thee no lies, made no mistakings, served/ Without or grudge or grumblings. Thou did promise/ To bate me a full year” (I.II.295-298). This line indicates Ariel asking for his freedom because s/he served Prospero for a year and his/her time is up. Ariel has been a faithful servant to Prospero and done everything he asked. From creating a tempest to creating illusions, Ariel could do almost anything as long as it was under Prospero 's command. Ariel’s power and Prospero 's power over him/her is represented in this quote, “ All hail, great master! Grave sir, hail! I come / To answer thy best pleasure. Be ’t to fly, / To swim, to dive into the fire, to ride / On the curled clouds, to thy strong bidding task / Ariel and all his quality” (I.II.224). I choose this quote because Ariel was telling Prospero that s/he would do anything for him, and was explaining everything that s/he could do (like creating fires, illusions, and affecting people while invisible). Therefore, Ariel has lots of power because he is magical and can affect others in many

The island is the perfect place where he can set out his plan because he has all control. “I boarded the King’s ship; now on the beak, Now in the waist, the deck, in every cabin, I flamed amazement. Sometimes I’d divide and burn in many places (1.2.199-200).” Ariel is talking here to his master Prospero, telling him that he has burned parts of the ship and caused havoc on the ship. But we still see that Prospero doesn’t want any one of them hurt.…

After being deceived by his brother and cast away to an island, Prospero was able to apply his knowledge and gain experience. Caliban urges his comrades to “ first possess his books; for without he’s but a sot, as I am, nor hath not one spirit to command” (The Tempest, p.53). The strict tone of “first possess his books” exemplifies how Prospero gains the knowledge of magic from his books, but only when he applies his knowledge is he able to command spirits and pose a threat to Caliban. When Miranda and Ferdinand see each other for the first time they instantly fall in love and Prospero reveals, “It goes on, I see, as my soul prompts it” (The Tempest, p.23).…

Humanity’s desire for power and control was the driving force behind the European colonial period beginning in the 16th century. The Tempest, written by William Shakespeare in 1610, portrays the social issues and insecurities that were caused due to the new-found colonialism. In the second scene of Act 2, the relationship between the colonizers and the colonized festers, consequently leading to discord. Shakespeare uses variations of literary devices, figurative language, diction, and combating tones to portray this societal conflict through the inequality that encompasses the partisan power struggles between the Europeans and natives on the island. Repetition and meter were singular literary devices used to create a discrepancy between Caliban…

Ariel is also almost like Prospero’s spy as he reports back everything that is said from the characters as Ariel has the ability to be unseen by the characters so they do not realise they are being listened to or having tricks played on them. Ariel is also similar to Slim as they both have bosses and are told to carry out tasks, but still they have power over people although they both have a limit of power due to them both having bosses and the audience and the reader of The Tempest and Of Mice and Men are sympathetic towards Ariel and Slim because of this as they are both trapped by the power of their…

We immediately see the connection between these characters, and the part of the relationship that the spirit will fulfil throughout the play. It is again Prospero that has taken the governing roll in the relationship between him and another character. Ariel addresses her master as sir on countless occasions during the scene, but not once is she/he prompted to do this by Prospero, nor is she ordered to obey, unlike Miranda who is constantly reminded that she is in the presence of her father, who was once Duke of Milan, Someone who she is expected to serve, and…

It is also possible that Ariel is a personification of his inner feelings – a want to be free from the strict Elizabethan theatre but stuck with completing all his task first. More importantly, power derived from “books” accentuate Shakespeare’s power in writing. Hence, the mention of “charms are all o’erthrown” in the epilogue finalises the end of his writing career and marks the end of his writing magic because his has given up on them, suggested in the word “o’erthrown”. Perhaps then, Shakespeare wants to show that as Prospero he is ultimately human and his power to write will not go on forever unlike his fantasy characters, marking the end to his final play. Therefore, the comparison between the different kings can show Shakespeare’s difference with his own…

Certainly it could be said that Prospero has created a new society on the island with himself as ruler In The Communist Manifesto Marx comments, “as the repulsiveness of the work increases, the wage decreases” . Indeed, although Caliban and Ariel do not receive monetary payment for their labour, Ariel is given the incentive of freedom as Prospero promises Ariel “I will discharge thee.” Once again Shakespeare employs the use of personal pronouns in Prospero’s speech in order to emphasise his position of power on the island. It is not Ariel and Caliban who decide their own actions but Prospero. Ariel’s freedom relies entirely on his obedience; as Andrew Ross writes, “labor practices not only constrain workers but do so while claiming to liberate them to do what they love.”…
