The Tempest And The Lion King Comparative Essay

When considering the interpretation of Shakespearean plays, it is common to find similarities among popular culture through iterations that can be directly linked, such as Hamlet to that of The Lion King in plot and character struggles. Furthermore, this enables for an intriguing investigation in to the works of Disney that may aid in the discovery of all sorts of other Shakespearean plots, and presenting them as a revision of historical pieces of art. For this document, the two works of The Tempest and Pocahontas will be studied to investigate the possibility of another revision that seems to impart a more modern cultural viewpoint than of the original work.
In order to introduce such an idea, it would be best for an introduction of characters that would go on to aid in the comparison. From the Tempest the cast consists of Prospero, Miranda, Ferdinand, Ariel, Caliban, Alonso, Stephano, Trinculo, Sebastian, Antonino and Gonzalo.

As a result of this, a decision must be made on the nature of the values that was held during that area of time culturally, and what Shakespeare intended for the Tempest to represent. Based upon the final concluding acts of the Tempest as well as the epilogue which goes on to reflect Shakespeare’s purpose of writing it. The interpretation that would be used in this document would so happen to be the one that would signify Shakespeare’s farewell to the stage, using Prospero as a metaphor for his own exploits as a playwright. This interpretation lends itself to be more agreeable through not only the actions Prospero’s manipulations, but of the references of his characters to his previous plays. This is especially relevant to Miranda and Ferdinand for the fact that their relationship is referential to Romeo and Juliet. Prospero even seems to acknowledge this attitude through the

A comparative study of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest and Yojiro Takita’s foreign film, Departures effectively highlights an individual’s ability to explore results in lasting impacts on their perspectives of the world and themselves. Both composers incorporate the vital idea that characters’ discoveries subsequently reflect integral actions of change. The Tempest sets the progressive drama of rediscovering the past through characters such as Miranda and her delayed knowledge of her history and humans resulting in new afflictions with love and confrontation. Subversively, in Departures, Takita manipulates Daigo as a vehicle to convey the desperate actions towards human shortcomings resulting in his emotional journey of acceptance of morality.…

Humanity’s desire for power and control was the driving force behind the European colonial period beginning in the 16th century. The Tempest, written by William Shakespeare in 1610, portrays the social issues and insecurities that were caused due to the new-found colonialism. In the second scene of Act 2, the relationship between the colonizers and the colonized festers, consequently leading to discord. Shakespeare uses variations of literary devices, figurative language, diction, and combating tones to portray this societal conflict through the inequality that encompasses the partisan power struggles between the Europeans and natives on the island. Repetition and meter were singular literary devices used to create a discrepancy between Caliban…

    Stereotypes In The Tempest

“Comic characterisation is usually subordinate to the demands of the plot and therefore these characters tend to be stereotypes and/or one-dimensional characters rather than portraying realistic human emotions”. Is this a fair assessment of the ‘low characters’ in The Tempest? The prevalence of stereotyping and having ‘flat’ characters may be attributed to the strong archetype or creative flexibility (respectively) that this creates for the author. When the audience sees a stereotype, they already know what to expect from the character, allowing the writer to spend more time on using the character for the purpose that they were originally designed for – creating comedic moments and humour -rather than introducing them. Whether this is a fair assessment of Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo is to be decided.…

The Tragedy of Othello, the moor of Venice, otherwise known as Othello, is a Shakespearean tragedy believed to be written in 1603. The quarto edition of the play first appeared in 1622; the version printed in the 1623 Folio edition is around 160 lines longer than the quarto and has over a thousand words differences in the writing. Othello revolves around the four central characters: the titular character Othello, his wife Desdemona, the main antagonist Iago and his lieutenant Cassio. Due to the play’s themes of racial prejudice, betrayal, love, jealousy, revenge and appearance vs reality, it has been consistently performed in theatres worldwide and Othello has been the source for many film and literary adaptations. In this essay, I aim to explore…

    Sexism In The Tempest

According to Lorie Leininger, modern thinking and knowledge has led to a deeper speculation of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, which suggest unholy acts of sexism and racism. Leininger argues that Prospero, a hyper masculine figure, uses his powers to undermine Miranda and Caliban along with asserting his dominance over them. A consistent argument that Leininger brings up is how Prospero talks down to his daughter “Miranda is given to understand that she is the foot in the family organization of which Prospero is the head” (148). This analogy proves that Prospero doesn’t see his own daughter as an equal, he doesn’t believe she can be strong and smart like the brain. Along with insulting his daughter, Prospero manipulates Miranda convincing…

Shakespeare’s The Tempest is a play that follows the stories of Prospero, Calbin, Ariel, and others while they are on an island that Prospero has taken control of for the time being in the story. This story is said to parallel the British colonizing the new world. I think this theory is correct because it has characters like Prospero who would represent the British colonizers and Calbin, who would represent the natives of the island. The story contains to many parallels to not be a critique.…

However, “Tempest” is Shakespeare’s last play and it is often believed that Prospero was a projection of Shakespeare. So, what if we read it that way? Perhaps through this comparison, Shakespeare shows the differences and similarities he had with his characters. Like Oberon, he was a leader: one that directed the entire play. He penned each event and situation that occurs and has full control which is why he is more authoritative in his leadership.…

Aime Cesaire is trying to show the tension in relationships between Prospero and other characters that may not have been obvious in The Tempest. In Shakespeare 's and Cesaire’s plays, Prospero unfairly tries to abuse and manipulate other characters, Miranda by using his magic on her to make her fall in love with the King of Naples’s son, Caliban by treating him as animal, and Ariel by enslaving him and refusing to give him his freedom, to show he has power despite losing his throne and crown in his own kingdom.…

William Shakespeare never ceases to communicate messages through his works, and The Tempest is no exception. There are many lessons and morals taught throughout the course of the play that have both positive and negative impacts. The themes of those who abuse power damaging others, and those that manipulate others for their own benefit are shown to be negative themes that pertain to the dark side of the story, while forgiveness being worth more than revenge teaches a more positive, valuable lesson. For instance, in the play, Prospero abuses the power that he possesses on the island and makes Caliban, the shipwrecked and Ariel suffer, showing one of the dark themes seen throughout the play. When Prospero and Miranda first arrive on the…

William Shakespeare’s The Tempest is a play from the beginning of the seventeenth century. It is believed to be one of Shakespeare’s last works. If considered from a postcolonial lens it can be interpreted that in this work Shakespeare offers an examination of colonization, particularly the moral aspects of it. In The Tempest the idea of colonization is communicated primarily through the relationship between the colonizers and the colonized in the play, specifically the relationship between Prospero and Caliban, and the parallels between the process of European colonization and the plot of the play.…
