Eltahawy informs the reader that Twitter can get the best of people and distract them from focusing on something else: “And that’s exactly why it’s destroying my life, my ability to write, and my ability to look away from the computer screen. I see a number up there on the Twitter tab and I must refresh, immediately.” This validation shows the reader how Twitter and social media can be a critical platform to have, but sometimes Twitter becomes addictive and takes over one’s daily life; causing a person to step away from everyday life to look at social media. Twitter and social media not only pull people away from one’s daily life, but it also pulls people away from communicating effectively with other people. The author says that Twitter is a distraction for her and that “[s]ometimes I’ll even tweet while I’m on the phone with my sister (we follow each other on Twitter) and she’ll tweet back, ‘I can’t believe you’re tweeting while we’re on the phone!!!’…

Weekly Reflection #9: Today, Michael Fenton talked about Desmos and what we should think about when we incorporate technology in the classroom. Reflect on the talk, the activities, and his philosophy of how we should incorporate tech in the classroom. Before Michael Fenton speech, I had hear about something people say, that someday we will live in a world where almost everything will be done through technology and where there will be not a lot of human interaction. Nevertheless, I did not think that this “idea” in one way or another, it was already developing in places such as a school. I believe that after I saw the photos Michael Fenton showed us of how in some schools students are isolated from each other when they are interacting with…

Every day of the week, we, as students are glued to a form of social media at some point in the day. The fact that many individuals found the need to express their opinion on the matter only demonstrated that Americans were passionately attached to the situation. Not only did normal individuals express their opinion, but also others like the President of the United States. President Barack Obama tweeted: “‘we should inspire more kids like you with science.…

When these feelings start to conquer the mind, people start to make decisions only to try and get over those feelings to pursue happiness. They might just post to make other people mad and jealous. For example, if their was an ex girlfriend that was jealous of her ex’s new girl, that girl might post just to rub it in and leave her statement. This goes to show that a number of people only use twitter, or other social media sites, just to get through to their followers. In an article titled, “The Positives and Negatives of Twitter: Exploring How Student-Athletes Use Twitter and Respond to Critical Tweets,” it is demonstrated that most student athletes claim to use twitter for three main reasons, all of which have to do with keeping up with what is going on and communicating with others.…

After a few weeks into the class, I became more comfortable with posting on my blog post, sending and receiving” tweets,” and commenting on my classmates on social media BlogSpot and Twitter accounts. I now realize that language is more than an essay and social media is a platform for a writer to address an audience, deliver a timely message with a specific purpose, and create a response from their readers. Social media platforms such as Twitter should not be feared and late adopters to technology should embrace it to keep in touch with the…

Analyzing both articles made me think of what was actually urgent: the student’s own performance in life, as a whole. Since it is a fact that the internet has become essential in every way, we might as well just learn how to work with it and gain from it, not lose. My point is that students have to start seeing their own posts on their social media as a real piece of writing, and that will only happen if they truly understand that every public expression is valuable, and therefore, it needs to be written as such. As a critic, I also recognize that being in the online world can be considered as a refuge from the reality, and because of that, students may think it is ok to misspell words, use slangs, and leave punctuation and grammar rules behind. That being said, I suggest that students learn the purpose of social media as a constructive and powerful communication…
