The Signature of Jesus is a book about offering Christians to live “faith” and not religion. What this means is that the author Brennan Manning wants us as readers to live our lives like Jesus; committed to simplicity, purity of heart, and obedience to the gospel.
From reading and studying the first pages of The Signature of Jesus, I learned the very purpose in which why Brennan Manning wrote the book. On the first page of chapter 1, Brennan Manning states that “if a person walks the road to Calvary, the skeletons of our egos, corpses of our fantasies of control, shards of self-righteousness, self-indulgent spirituality, and unfreedom will be littered along the road.” The “high road to Calvary” is the site of the crucifixion outside Jerusalem. The journey from Haran to Canaan was about Abraham leaving all known and having to journey to the unknown for God’s call. Abraham’s task was extremely difficult and courageous which made him the model of faith. Abraham is the model of authentic faith because he is a movement into obscurity, into the undefined, into ambiguity, and not into some predetermined, clearly delineated plan for the future. Abraham’s courageous and faithful nature can be learned from because by being a courageous and faithful person to God, God will and reward
