“The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story about the killing of an old man. Poe, who is the murderer, talks about what made him decide to kill the old man. In his mind, he despises not the old man, but his pale blue eye. Nonetheless, he discerns himself as being “nervous” rather than “mad”. By doing this, he also conveys the idea of obsession over the old man's discriminating eye. This idea blossoms as he continues to explain his argument of “madness vs nervousness” in conjunction with his textual structure like his repetition, punctuation and timing, pacing. Though the analyzation of his textual usage, it becomes relevant that they all point to the idea of obsession. Poe starts off by saying “nervous-very,very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad ?”. He asks the reader why he/she thinks that he is mad. This question repeats again when he says “how, then, am I mad?”. This early development of repetition introduces the idea of obsession within textual structure. He repeats this question to the reader as if he feels insecure about something, not madness because he makes it too obvious to the reader of that idea. He …show more content…
An example of this is in paragraph 2, were he says, “I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this!”. With his exclamation marks and commas, he develops the idea of over-excitement and with his actual word meaning. As so, this shows the idea of obsession. Another example is in paragraph 7, he tells, “I knew what the old man felt, and pitied, although I chucked at heart”. With his punctuation, he sets apart two ideas, one stating that he really likes the old man but the second one showing that he chucked at him. This demonstrates that he likes the old man and his presents, but really there is something within himself that stops him from truly liking the old man. This in return, leaves room for obsession to take

In the passage from The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, it is evident that carefully chosen language helps to convey specific tones in the passage. One tone common in this passage is that of stillness, loneliness, even that of silence. One way that the author conveys tone is through the way the main character proceeds about his work. Taken from the passage Poe writes, “And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it --oh so gently” (4-5)! In this line, the author shows a sense of stillness through the adverb gently.…

Edgar Allen Poe captivated everyone with the short story The Tell-Tale Heart, which forced readers to questions one's mental state, deciding on whether someone is guilty or innocent, whether someone is conscious of their actions, or if they are sane or criminally insane. The Tell-Tale Heart is the perfect example of the argument of whether an individual is aware of their actions and the crimes they commit or if they are possessed and driven to commit crimes by something in their mind, in which they could possibly use an insanity plea during their trial if they are caught. The narrator, who Edgar Allen Poe portrays as insane, is not, and during this essay, I will outline examples as to why he is not and that he is fully aware of the crimes that he is committing. The first example as to his premeditation is how he is explaining the story to the audience.…

The variation of strange and disturbed characters has been a constant throughout all works of gothic fiction. In The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator murders an old man for which he has an almost familial love. It is clear that the novel’s narrator has a questionable mental state due to his weak grasp upon reality. This is seen in the way he attributes special powers to the old man’s eye and in his incomprehension towards neighbours hearing the final heartbeats of his victim. First of all, the narrator associates fictional powers with the old man’s pale blue eye.…

“Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold and so by degrees—very gradually—I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever” (Poe 619). He is afraid of the old ma’s eye that lies inside of him because he fears the person he has become. The way the narrator has the delicateness and caution to get rid of the vulture-like eye and then confess to the crime, clearly shows his obsessions towards the old man. “Object there was none. Passion there was none.…
