The Tell Tale Heart Foreshadowing Analysis

A lot of stories have something called foreshadowing, which tells the reader what will happen later on in the form of a little hint or clue. The Man with No Eyes, The Telltale Heart, Charles and The Diamond Necklace all have foreshadowing. Any author can do foreshadowing and it can be hardly noticeable or it can be a little obvious but really hard to notice. The Man Who Had No Eyes is a very good starting example of foreshadowing. Early on in the story we are first introduced to Mr. Parsons the author mentions that he has wooden cane. And he hears the clacking of a blind man’s cane. This was a clever trick used by the writer. Not many readers would guess that Parsons would also be blind just like Markwardt. The way Mr. Parsons is described also lowers the chances of the reader guessing that he is blind readers don’t see many blind millionaires. And The fact that the author only mentions the sense of hearing and not sight was also a clever use of foreshadowing because almost all blind people find their way …show more content…
At the very beginning of the story the Madman tells the reader that he has a really sharp sense of hearing. He also states that he can hear things from Heaven, Hell and Earth. At the end of the story he confesses to the police because he heard the old man’s heartbeat which drove him crazy. Poe’s foreshadowing is extremely effective ‘most readers do not notice it while reading. Readers have to read it a second time to notice the Madman’s clue. It’s very well hidden. it’s placed right at the beginning, which is the part that most readers will forget when they reach the end, especially the first time they read it. The line may even confuse readers the first time they read the story, but they will notice it the second or third time they read it.
