“When writing a novel a writer should create living people; not characters. A character is a caricature.”-Ernest Hemingway. In a story authors design people, but we define them as characters. Characters have minds, feeling, moods, and looks, just like humans and we put them in a text and can’t help pretending that they exist. In the short storyThe Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, the author uses descriptive writing and figurative language to develop the characters. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe that uses descriptive writing to develop the characters in a way to make the story interesting. One example is, “Many a night, just at midnight, when all the world slept, it has welled up from my own bosom, …show more content…
The author uses a metaphor to describe the old man, “I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it.” This example supports my thesis because when he compares the man’s eye to a vulture's it helps you understand how he sees the man. This helps you understand the man’s fear. Then, later on in the story he uses repetition, “I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed… I moved it slowly- very, very slowly… I undid the lantern cautiously- oh so cautiously, cautiously.” This helps the reader understand the story by exaggerating the fact that the man is not in his right mind; he is repeating himself, making the story of him murdering an old man more suspenseful. The last example is the author using personification to describe the man's eye, “For it was the man I felt I had to kill; it was the eye, his evil eye.” This helps the reader understand the fear he feels when he looks into that man’s eye; it also helps you understand the man's personality, if he was a nice man then the mad-man wouldn't have such a strong urge to kill him. The Author uses figurative language to help the reader understand the text, and also the main character’s

The images in Poe’s story reveal the emotions: loathsome and guilt because of the old man’s eye. To set the scene the plot goes a little something like this: A man tells a story of how he killed an old innocent man that he loved for no reason, but then he goes to talk about his atrocious "vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it"(11). In the course of the story the murderous man continues to talk about how killing the old man would be a decency to everyone and how normal/sain.…

This story being one of Poe’s most terrifying stories because of his excellent use of literary device of setting. The first major primary elements that were found while examining Poe’s writing was the explanation of the time of day through little key events, this is very important especially in this specific story because it really makes an image in the reader's head. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, the information provided by the narrator is unreliable. His descriptions and explanations are warped and illogical, and it is very blatant that he is lying and bluffing. There are many parts of the story in which this is the case. By repeating certain adverbs and adding other adjectives adds to the drama and makes it more intense and suspenseful, his paranoia adds to the stress and anxiety that the narrator is feeling; for example poe could've easily written “Very cautiously” instead of “cautiously-oh, so cautiously —cautiously” to get his point across, But by repeating certain words over and over again the author creates a situation that is much more stressful, horrid and cruel. These repetitions bring the reader and the narrator much closer together because the reader intensely feels what the narrator is going through and how he is trying to justify his actions by repeating adjectives such as “wide” in “It was open --wide, wide open.” if it wasn't for this, the reader wouldn't be convinced of what the narrator is trying to justify and make sense of. Moreover, by repeating certain words the reader can’t help but to sympathize with the killer and question his (in)sanity. it creates an anxiety and paranoia which requires a hasty action and Poe took this concept and implement it very well in the story to a point it becomes the primary force at engaging the reader with how the narrator is feeling during the course of the…

Identity forms an important part of the tell-tale heart. The identity of the narrator and their perception of self and their own insanity forms part of the short story’s overall charm and mystique. Poe as a writer is very aware of the effect his writing has on readers and purposefully crafts this character along with the character of the old man in order to create an intimate and suspenseful piece of writing. By following his own Gothic manifesto Poe is able to utilise his writing and narration within the story to “then combine(s) such events as may best aid him in establishing this preconceived effect.” (Poe, Review of Hawthorne, 1842)…
