In her paper “The Teening of Childhood” by Kay Hymowitz that was published in movementforchildhood.com, Hymowitz describes how media is changing the way of the tweens of today. Media has a way of changing a perspective at a childhood to tweens. The main ways media is having an influence on tweens begins with children’s toys, such as Barbie, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Media has a certain way of changing a young child into a tween that wants so much more. Hymowitz (2011) states, “children with dreams of teen sophistication and tough independence began with Barbie” (Hymowitz 103). Since there are children that live with a divorced parent, they are learning to fend for themselves at a young age.

There are movies, clothing ads, and many other forms of media that have an influence on an individual. According to “Following Trending Topics: Social Media in Modern Teen Movies” by David Crewe published in Screen Education, Crewe talks about the movie The Duff, and how the use of social media can either have a positive or negative effect throughout school. Throughout the beginning and the middle of the movie the main character Bianca is being cyberbullied because of the way she looks. She is clumsy and when she is around her friends she is the “Designated Ugly Fat Friend” or “DUFF”. She wants to not be the “DUFF” in her group of friends so she has her neighbor, Wesley help her become a new better her (Crewe 83). Tweens and teens can be affected by cosmetic advertisements too because again, the young girls don’t know how their face is going to look within so many years. Media can exploit cosmetic products just like they can with supermodels and how thin they can be, due to society and how society wants everyone to be. Cosmetic products can be advertised one way because of how the product is made or how the effects of the products will look after a young woman uses the products. Media will want young girls to buy cosmetic products because they want to look beautiful and make up is the only way around it to make a young girl beautiful instead of wearing no make up to look

    After watching the documentary film Consuming Kids (Directors A. Barbaro and J. Earp, (2008), I had some interesting insights about how childhood was influenced by media and technology. In addition, I found it interesting how advertisement industries manipulated children into commercials signifying to children that the key to happiness was through having certain brand things in order to be cool in past and present society, but the film did not show how values shaped childhood too. What the film lacked in showing were the processes it took in order to have stuff.
