The Gospel Synopsis

The Gospel according to Mark starts out with a man known as John the Baptist. John along with other townspeople went into the wilderness to repent their sins, and John baptizes everyone. During the baptisms, John told the townspeople that someone with greater power then him will be coming soon. Jesus then comes to the river to be baptized by John, and was recognized by the Holy Spirit of God as His son. After being baptized and being recognized, Jesus was sent into the wilderness for 40 days to be tested and tempted by satan. Jesus returns and shares the good news to the townspeople. Leading this mob was Judas, one of the 12 disciples. Jesus was arrested and taken to the high priest who tries to find a reason to kill him. He asks Jesus if he is the Messiah, Jesus replies yes. From there his clothes were torn off, he was blindfolded, spit at, and was beaten. Jesus is then sent to Pontius Pilate who agrees to crucify him. They placed a crown of thorns onto Jesus’ head and was crucified at Golgotha. His body was put into a tomb with a large stone covering the entrance. Three days after Jesus’ death, Mary Magdalene and a few other women went to visit the tomb and found that the stone covering the entrance was gone. They walked inside the tomb and saw no body. They saw a man in white sitting in the tomb. This man told them that Jesus has risen and for them to go back and tell the townspeople. They became jealous and arrested all of the disciples and put them into the public jail. During the first night, angels opened the door and told the disciples to go and tell the people of their new life. When the priests returned to the jail the next morning, the disciples were nowhere to be found. Someone told them they heard the disciples were in the temple preaching to the people. The priests brought the disciples back without force in fear that their followers would stone them. They were questioned and the disciples replied by saying that they must obey God. The priests were furious with this response and wanted to kill them all. A Pharisee named Gamaliel told the priests to just leave the men alone because they will never be able to stop them. So the disciples were released and continued with their teachings. The disciples increased their number of 12 to 18 in order to spread the word of God
