The Book of Matthew According to an ancient tradition, Matthew the apostle wrote the gospel that bears his name (Rhodes 234). The book is believed to be a rewriting of Mark’s gospel. The New Interpreters Study Bible states the gospel was probably a rewriting of Marks Gospel, written around 70 CE (NIB 1745). The bible also states quotations from Matthew in several early 2nd-century writings provide a window of c. 75- c.100 CE (NIB 1745). The book is believed to be written in Galilee or Antioch in Syria based upon the way it was written. The New Interpreters Study Bible states it 's place of composition is perhaps Galilee or Antioch in Syria; the latter has support from the Syrian and Antiochene links of both the Didache and Ignatius (NIB 1745).

I believe this is why he is believed to have wrote the gospel Matthew.
