My school setting shows some growth from past models of what school used to look like. For example, technology is included in all classrooms and very rarely would you see desks lined in rows. Most settings have students sitting in some formation that would allow collaborative work opportunities to take place among students. The science department has a garden growing behind our school for their user. However, I believe there is still a need to update the setting. Since our student-teaching days?
When I was a student, technology was not a part of socialization. We did not have any sort of social technology. Technology was what would now be considered primitive. Calculators, electric typewriters, and computers with orange or green font were state of the art. I only used those tools to produce products that were shared with my teachers. My first high school computer class in 1989 had students writing basic codes to have the computer perform some basic task. When I was student teaching, technology still had not reached the point where it could play a significant role in enhancing the learning in the classroom.
Today students can instantly interact with thousands of others with similar interests, across the country or world. Wilmarth (2010) suggests that “digital social networks may be the biggest game changer in learning and what it means to be educated” (pp. 85). Students are not just consuming information through these interactions but have become creators of information. They are able to harness “the raw power of social production to create information and knowledge artifacts” (Wilmarth, 2010, pp.
