Taming Of The Shrew Women's Legacy

In this generation, most women are not afraid to stand their ground, wear what they want, and marry the men they want to. This is all because of one big legacy that changed women rights forever, The Women’s Rights Movement. This changed women’s everyday thoughts, it changed the way women looked at themselves in the mirror. Every single lady from all over America took a stand against men saying, “Enough! Enough! You ignorant men!” Although, before the time of The Women’s Rights Movement, during the time that, The Taming of the Shrew, was written women didn’t stand up for themselves. Women didn’t decide what they were going to wear or what they were going to do on a day-to-day basis. Women were not allowed to just marry whomever they wanted to. They listened to men, like dolls, robots, constantly doing whatever men wanted them to do. In this play, The Taming of the Shrew, William Shakespeare shows how women were known only as men’s possessions.
Furthermore, in the play, The Taming of the Shrew, Katherina wasn’t allowed to stand her ground to her husband, Petruchio. On Katherina and Petruchio’s wedding day, as Katherina is trying

Petruchio wanted the very “best” for his wife. He mentions that the meat they were about to eat was far to done, “And I’m telling you it was burnt and dried out. I’m not allowed to eat overcooked meat. It gives me indigestion and that makes me irritable. Very, very irritable. Better for us to go hungry, since we’re both hotheaded, than for us to eat meat that’s been cooked too long.” (Shakespeare 4. 1. 8). The bed she was supposed to sleep in had something wrong with it, and the beautiful gown and hat she was supposed to wear to her father’s house weren’t good enough for Petruchio. This left Katherina hungry, tired, and wearing the poorest garments. Katherina was so embarrassed but that didn’t bother Petruchio at

Examining Individuality in Literature and Films Alex Grey once said: “In a society that tries to standardize thinking, individuality is not highly prized.” Over the years, this has progressively become clearer as the pressure to conform to society continues to create trouble and anxiety to any who attempt to be true to themselves and to those who are forced to hide behind a front. The Taming of the Shrew and Singin’ in the Rain both examine how the roles that society places us in makes it difficult to embrace our own individuality and differences as people. Despite being in different situations and time periods, both Katherine Minola and Don Lockwood felt the effects of society’s expectations of conformation in their daily lives, but, with…

“Thy husband is thy lord, thy keeper,” (Katherina: Act 5 Scene 2) To what extent do you feel Katherina’s personality has radically changed at the end of the play, or is she just performing the role of a traditional Elizabethan woman? Katherina, as one of the most complex characters in Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, provokes audiences everywhere to question the sincerity of her conformation at the end of the play. Katherina is presented to the audience as a witty, independent, resilient woman and as a result of her behaviour is labelled a ‘shrew’. It soon becomes apparent that she is somewhat feared by men– “From all such devils, good lord deliver us!”…

Being set in the 1500’s, in Zeffirelli’s adaptation of the Shakespearean play Katherina was portrayed as a what was then known as a “shrew”. (definition of shrew on presentation) When we first see Katherina in Zeffirelli’s film, she appears to be rather unfeminine, when the era the film was set is considered. Throughout the movie Katherina appears to become more “tamed” and feminine, although she still has an occasional outburst of boisterousness. Petruchio is portrayed as a very masculine figure who wishes to tame and control Katherina.…

Katherine is viewed as an outlier when compared to other woman characters in Shakespeare hence why the play centers around her shrewish nature. However Shakespeare wrote the play to prove a point that any girl that acts like this is a detriment to her family or any man in her life. In Natasha Korda’s, Shakespeare’s Domestic Economies, she describes Kate behavior before she was “domesticated” as “untamed, animal-like consumption, Tranio’s remark….. wears away at both her father’s resources and at her own value as well”(Korda 2002). Korda’s book revolves around the term “domestic economy”, which she believes describes a woman’s value in Shakespeare. A woman is measured by her output of tasks in her household as well how many resources she drains from her family.…

Shakespeare clearly shaped the character of Petruchio and his attitudes toward both women and the roles of husband and wife in marriage so that Petruchio would be able to suppress the character of Katherina and to make her into what he saw as the perfect wife. With the taming of the shrew Shakespeare seems to be through the comedy of the play commenting on the woman’s role in Elizabethan England by portraying it to an extreme, he seems to be in a way commenting on the hypocrisy of women being seen as subservient to men even though the country at the time was ruled by a woman. This is first portrayed, as many of The Taming of the Shrews themes are, in the induction as one way in which Shakespeare refers to male dominance and courtship is through the relationship between Sly and the Page. Here we see the Page saying to Sly “I am your wife in all obedience” showing his submissive nature as this male character refers to himself as “wife” as he intends to show him all the respect a superior figure deserves. He is taking the role of an ideal, obeying wife for the men of the times and an opposite of Katherina’s original character, the Page is similar to the role of the tamed Katherina.…
