A folktale is “a tale or legend originating and traditional among a people or folk, especially one forming part of the oral tradition of the common people” (Dictionary.com). The tale can and often begins with “Once upon a time” or “Long, long ago” and has a lesson or meaning behind each one. Each country often has its own set of folk tales, others share the same basic idea but change in some ways to fit their country and ways of life. The story of Rapunzel is one of these such folk tales. The original Grimm fairytale was written and published in 1812. In the film we find that the princess, due to no fault of her own, has been locked far away in a tower and needs a “prince” to come and save her. Being that the Grimm Brothers took part in writing, the plot for the movie, it follows the original tale of Rapunzel very closely. In the original tale of Rapunzel archetypal elements are hidden throughout. Each archetype represents a different idea that authors slyly interpret into stories. The Grimm Brothers use the tower, Rapunzel’s tear, and Rapunzel's hair to construe a deeper meaning in their story. As the story is told Rapunzel gets locked away in a tower while she grows up. The tower is an actual part of the story which represents an isolation of oneself, but metaphorically is resembled as being a strong place for evil “Locked her in a tower that stood in a forest and that had neither a door nor a stairway, but only a tiny little window at the very top” (Ashliman).…

When girls are older they want to find their true love then create their family,” which reinforces the fairy tale love stereotype that girls need to wait for their prince then fall immediately in love with him, with the reverse being true for boys(60). An example of this is seen in the story of Rapunzel, where she is locked in a tower and a romantic prince comes to rescue her, where they end up falling madly in love. An ideal of love passed through this story is that your dream prince will come find you or that if you are a male you should go find your princess idly waiting for you. The story of Rapunzel also adds to the idea that women should be passive and wait for their prince to come and take them far away and men have to go out and rescue their princess. Another inaccurate portrayal of love is true love at first sight, which is seen in the story of Sleeping Beauty, where Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip stumble upon each other and then fall madly in love at first sight.…
