The Tale Of Invidia's Mirror

Great Essays
A tale! I have a tale to tell- a terrible, troublesome tale, but a tale nonetheless. Would you like to hear it? If so, open your mind and your heart, but be warned- this is no ordinary tale of heroes and monsters; this is a tale of twisted hearts and treacherous minds, with a not-so-happy ending. This, my dear friends, is the tale of a mirror.

It started, as it often does, with a jealous heart. The keeper of said heart was a young woman- kind as she was beautiful. Her beauty was treasured- yea, coveted by many. However, there was another- as the story often goes- who was more beautiful, more dainty, and simply more in comparison. What was the girl to do but seethe in silence? Perhaps before we continue, we should name the two- the jealous being Invidia and the other more

When he arrived she received him kindly and allowed him entrance to her home so he may watch her open the gift according to Kyoko’s wishes. Once Invidia had unwrapped the gift, she studied it, well pleased by the craftsmanship that had been used to create such a masterpiece, having yet to look into the mirror. She thanked the stable boy and talked with him for a while yet, being as she was kind in heart. Eventually the stable hand left with a call goodbye over his shoulder and an agreement to meet for dinner sometime soon.
Once he was gone, Invidia smiled happily and went to pick up the mirror, looking into its shining surface.
And what she saw made her heart pound with terror and her blood sing through her ears.
It was her- no doubt about it. But what she saw in the mirror was a monster. Her jealousy was brought forth into her reflection, and what stared back at her was a green eyed monster. In the light of her newfound horror, she slammed down the mirror, buried her face in her hands and wept.

The title of Lucille Clifton’s “What the Mirror Said” resembles a parallel to the story of Snow White. The Evil Queen constantly looks into her mirror and asks it whom is the fairest in the land; the answer usually points to her, but one day it mentions that a younger woman that is even more beautiful. This poem may take the form of either the Evil Queen, having her self-confidence snatched away from her after years of assurance or of Snow White, a woman who was deemed because of both her appearance and behavior to be the fairest in the land. In lines seven through nine, the narrator states, “Listen, somebody need a map to understand you.”…

Rumored to bring seven years of bad luck upon breaking, a mirror allows the reflection of oneself to be seen. In folklore, mirrors are believed to also show the soul of the person standing before it. Toni Morrison’s novel Song of Solomon illustrates this idea in an interesting way: feeling incohesive before a mirror represents a lack of identity. The protagonist, Milkman, gives himself an identity by taking a journey to find his past and becomes a cohesive individual. Milkman’s contemplation of himself in front of the mirror emphasizes the need to find an identity to be a complete individual.…

The Boys Will Not Like You I remember back in early 2010, when I first began my journey as a debutante I would wear my makeup a little darker than what was okay and dress a little more tomboyish than what was acceptable for a lady presenting herself to society. This upset my mentor, who always dressed nice, always had perfectly fixed hair, and looked as if she walked off the cover of Elle magazine. One day, my mentor uttered the words, “Honey, if you look like that and continue to act un-lady like, the boys will not like you.” “The boys will not like you,” she’d only say that to me and I learned it as, “you are you, the boys will not like you.”…

In many classic fairy tales, the role of women is directly tied to her relationships with men. In the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, the role of the looking glass is to allow Snow White’s stepmother to gain truth of her questions, which the literary website SurLaLune interprets as the male gaze, which objectifies the woman. However, this interpretation is viewing the Stepmother’s hatred to be jealousy of Snow White’s beauty as a method to gain men. This is a one dimensional argument because it does not take into account the Stepmothers own feelings, and rather diminishes them to seeking male attention. I believe that the mirror represents the Stepmother’s insecurities in herself and her reflection of her soul, which she projects by hating Snow White.…

Ever heard of the Blair Witch that haunts the Black Forrest in Maryland? It’s based on a true event close to The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, that happened in 1692. The Blair Witch Trials were held because a woman was accused of witch craft, almost identical to Salem, where a group of girls accused over one hundred and fifty men and women of witchcraft. Witchcraft was a sensitive subject in the 15 th and 16 th century, which caused multiple unnecessary deaths to take place. This is what makes the Salem Witch Trials and Blair Witch two of the darkest, most horrid in history.…

It is part of human nature to make mistakes and sometimes learn and grow from them, or sometimes repeat them. In “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the main themes of youth, new beginnings, wisdom, self image, and repetition of mistakes are exemplified through the use of symbols through the character’s perspective of themselves and their environment. The characters; Mr.Medbourne, Colonel Killigrew, Mr.Gascoigne, and Widow Wycherly are prime examples of people repeating mistakes even when given a second chance to learn and progress. Hawthorne’s theme of in order to grow as a person, one must learn from mistakes and progress as a person is best shown by vivid and explicit symbols; the rose, which symbolizes acceptance of old…
