In The Tale of Genji Mappō is an immense theme within its story. Mappō is a term popular in the Heian Period used to describe the ideal that nothing lasts and that one day all good things must come to an end. The Tale of Genji has many scenarios in which Mappō is shown such as that many girls Genji had fallen for and wanted to spend his life with them ended up dying; some of them being Yugao, Aoi, and Murasaki. The deaths of his lovers and all the betrayal plus his exile show Mappō to its fullest extent. Aoi is the women that he deemed the love of his life and died shortly after giving birth to a boy. Philip Caputo’s A Rumor of War tells the story of a man’s demoralization during the Vietnam war and how it is associated with a refusal to any direct guilt for his own actions in that war. Throughout the book, you can sense the murderousness that comes from Caputo due to several reasons. Although, at the end of the book, he does not confess this murderousness urge that he experienced during his time in Vietnam. Overall, I believe that Philip Caputo was able to prove that he is not guilty and that he is a victim to the U.S. government and the U.S. military as well as the environment of Vietnam, and the relentlessness of combat training. Coming straight out of his own mouth, Caputo was able to prove compelling evidence that these forces developed…

This evidently shows that Gen lacks a sense of self or a presence. This is also evident as throughout his captivity while he is translating for the hostages and their captors, as he does not pay attention to their matters and is merely speaking on behalf of others. However, as the duration of their imprisonment progresses Gen begins to realize this that he is unable to speak for himself and is only habitual of speaking for others. Also, by being isolated from his normal routine of being Mr. Hosokawa’s extension and being forced to translate and communicate for others Gen is brought to the realization of his own feelings and eventually discovers himself through his love for Carmen and Mr. Hosokawa. Gen hence comes to the realization that, “he [Gen] had gone from nothing to loving two people.”…

The Eastern Hero that I have selected is Yu, also known as Yu the Great. According to traditional accounts, Yu combated the flood by following the examples found in nature. Draining fields, dredging rivers, and cutting passes through the mountains, he thus succeeded where his father, Kun, who used dikes to restrain the floods and block their course, had failed. Credited with the shaping of China's waterways and irrigation systems, he became the patron saint of all hydraulic engineering. Even more so, Genji has a fatal flaw in his pursuit of true love which sees him get caught in an affair and exiled for a short period which again fits the description of a classical hero. Despite of all ot this, there area laos moments when Genji does not act like a classical hero specifically in his interactions with women and his unfilial actions.
