Refugees In Syrian Civil War

More than 11 million people have been displaced as a result of the Syrian civil war (MercyCorps, 2016). With a death toll of approximately 190,000 innocent women, children and men killed (MercyCorps, 2016) the Syrian civil war is considered to be the worst humanitarian crisis “of our era” (Peralta, 2014). For this reason, intervention and help are actions that need to be taken by the world leaders to provide aid to the refugees who flee their home country in hopes of being able to obtain peace and live in freedom. Thus, all Syrian refugees who pass the required background and security screenings, should be granted asylum in the United States of America. An ideology that until recent events many Americans shared, but since the attacks on Paris and an increase of islamophobia in the media, many have been misconstrued to believe that resettling Syrian refugees in our country is perilous. They are defined and protected by international law, and must not be expelled or returned to situations where their life and freedom are at risk (UNHCR, 2016). Additionally, the UNHCR states the goal is to certify that the “basic human rights” (2016) of the refugees are protected. Basic human rights that are stripped away from millions of Syrians constantly because of the civil war that is occurring in their country. Basic human rights, a fundamental idea that that the founding fathers of America felt was extremely important, that is that as humans we all have certain inalienable rights and under no circumstance should those rights be taken away(ushistory.org, 2016). Therefore, as a nation that was founded on the principal of all humans prospering and being able to live freely, we must all come together and realize that by welcoming refugees in times of bedlam our nation only continues to grow and become better (ATTN,
