In 1801, Lockwood comes to Wuthering Heights in order to rent a house called Thrushcross Grange. Here, he meets Heathcliff, a man who lives in the Wuthering Heights. In this stormy house, Lockwood’s curiosity takes him to ask Nelly, the housekeeper, the story of Heathcliff and the strange events of Whutering Heights. Nelly begins the story and Lockwood takes notes in his diary.
To start with, Nelly, as a young woman, starts to work as a servant in Wuthering Heights for Mr. Earnshaw and his family. On one hand, Wuthering Heights is described as a dark and desolate house. Wuthering that means: “a significant provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmosphere tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather”. It is the name given to the house that is situated on the bleak hill top. For this reason, its name proposes a place with constant winds from the north where only excessive stunted firs grows in the end of the house. Structurally, it contains deeply narrow windows set in the wall and its corners are protected with jutting stones. In contrast, the Thrushcross Grange is a beautiful and well maintained house with luxurious things that gives an especial atmosphere to the house. It is described as –ah! It’s beautiful- a splendid place carpeted with crimson, and covered chairs and tables and a pure white ceiling bordered by gold (...).Another difference is that, Wuthering Heights is related to the stormy and dark family with real feelings. They can manipulate people or can be wild and violent. For instance, Heathcliff is a rude, selfish and wild violent. In addition, Hindley is jealous of Heathcliff and he is also weak and insecure because he cannot solve problems without committing mistakes. One similarity is that the houses represent the personality of the characters. On one hand, Wuthering Heights represent the mystery and dark personality of Heathcliff who always demonstrates his interest for revenge in order to obtain what he wants. On the other hand, Thrushcross Grange shows a comfortable background for the Linton´s family and it is in this quality which represents the calmness of the Linton. For example, Edgar has the best character and always respects the people around him. Another similarity is that, both houses suffer the terrible diseases of some members of the family. In addition, both families lose their owners and the head of the family. For this reason, the power of the Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange are inherited by the man who is alive.
To sum up, the two houses presents more differences than similarities because they represent different families and a distinct style of life. On one hand, the Linton’s family is a sophisticated and sweet group of people. On the other hand, Earnshaw’s family is wild and passionate people. Both of them suffer the loss of some members of the family; consequently it causes problems in the relationships with their partners because of their rivalry and their desire for more
