Lu Symphony Orchestra Concert Report Sample

On Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm I attended the LU Symphony Orchestra Concert in Towns Auditorium. Prior to the concert beginning, I noticed a wide variety of instruments on the stage. There were some instruments that I did not know the name of but for the most part, I knew a large majority of the string, woodwind and brass instruments presented. The last time that I went to a symphony was when I was in elementary school, so attending an orchestral concert in college was a much different experience. I was fascinated by the diversity of instruments. andI also appreciated that they weren’t all just brass and woodwind instruments like you would find in a high school band. Some instruments that I took note of were the two harps, two bass’, six cellos, some viola’s, and many violins. There were also tubas, oboes, bassoons, and a grand piano. Before the performance started, a student who was performing stood up and walked to the conductor’s stage, and tuned all of the …show more content…
I learned that there are different movements in pieces. For the first half of the concert I kept thinking the piece was over and was wondering why the conductor wasn’t stepping away and why no one was clapping. It turns out that the orchestra was actually just transitioning into the next movement of the piece.
The first piece, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concert, mvt 3 had two separate movements. This piece was my favorite one of the night. The sounds changed so much and the emotion that they brought with them changed as well. The music reminded me of a movie score featuring pirates and sailing ships, but then as movements changed I pictured The Hobbit. In the second movement of the first piece the woodwind instruments began to pluck their strings, and it gave me really happy thoughts. As strange as it sounds, I associated the sound of plucking woodwinds with fairies dancing in a meadow or a unicorn running through a

The music design of One Flat Thing Reproduced was quite complimentary to the entire essence of the composition. Right at the beginning when you watch the two dancers eerily crawl under the tables in the shadows, you begin to hear equally as unearthly noises courtesy of Thom Willems (music director). These sounds, which can hardly be considered music, continue throughout the entire piece. The music would change at times and never distinctly following any type of pattern, while it also allowed the dancers movements to be heard. This greatly allowed for the emotion and story to seep through without being suffocating, leading to a more natural work.…

On Sunday, June 21st, I went to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform “The Music of John Williams and Hollywood’s Great Composers” at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The concert was held in the church’s worship room at 6:30pm. This was a great place for the DSO to perform because the audience and the orchestra were very close and, in a way, felt more personal. The show included fourteen pieces: “Overture to Captain Blood by Korngold, ‘Tara’ – A Short Poem for Orchestra from Gone with the Wind by Steiner, arr.…

The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. The event that I decided to go was BYU Baroque Ensemble, a production made by BYU students, taking place at Madsen Recital Hall Harris Fine Arts Center on November 3. The idea of making a baroque orchestra is where musician get together to make a perfect composition of music, the baroque orchestra is made up mostly of stringed instruments, when you listen you feel something different that makes you see it from another perspective, you just can’t stop listening and focus on every note that the musicians are playing. The type of instruments that were utilized in conjunction were the basso continuo, played by a viol, cello or bassoon. Other parts were added between the melody and the bass by a keyboard instrument, usually a harpsichord or organ and the development of tonal harmony, in which the melodic voices movement remains under the functional chord progression.…
