To look deeper than what is in plainview can often be beneficial, when you are doing this you are using symbols. What comes to mind when you hear scar, red candle, and moon lady. Just hearing those words can sound like nonsense, but one must look deeper than the surface to fully understand.
Scar; an artifact that reminds and individual of a painful experience. The word scar has a different meaning to An-Mei this was one of the saddest days she had experienced during her childhood. To Lindo Jong red candle means something deeper than your ordinary candle. From Lindo perspective the word red candle means the start and end to her doomed marriage. Being from the traditional Chinese culture, Lindo knew who she was meant to marry due to being a part of an arranged marriage. Matchmakers who worked for a wealthy family found the family’s son’s destined wife. this lucky lady turned out to be Lindo. When Lindo became an appropriate age, it was time to marry her future husband. At the wedding it wasn’t made official by a kiss. It was officialized by the lighting two red candles. one for the groom and one for the bride. Once lit marked the start of the couple’s spiritual unity. After many months of loveless nights and disrespect, Lindo decided upon herself that it was time to end this doomed relationship. She did this by lying to her mother-in-law to get out of her marriage. “Our ancestors came to me and said they wanted to see our wedding. So Tyan-yu and I held the same ceremony for our ancestors. We saw the matchmaker light the candle and give it to the servant to watch. It is ironic that definition of moon lady is at least half of the moon lady’s definition to Ying-ying St.Clair. To Ying-ying the moon lady is a lady who represents the moon, but she is also a lady that grants people their secret wish. Most of all she was a lady that helped Ying-ying discover something great to live by. When Ying-ying was a young girl she and many others gathered together for the Moon Festival. This is the festival where everyone waited eagerly for the arrival of the Moon Lady. The Moon Lady was the highlight of the whole event because, she was the one who granted people their most secret wish. When it became time to see the Moon Lady Ying-ying fell into the water. She was then rescued by the fishermen on the little boat on the side of the pavilion the festival was on. Next Ying-ying suffered from embarrassment, and being cold and wet. She was embarrassed because right when she fell off of the pavilion she expected to see her family looking for her and being all upset that she is missing; but when the pavilion passed by everyone on there just pointed and laughed at her. She didn 't even see her family look for her. So she quickly gave up and just wanted to go home. Ying-ying later came across the Moon Lady, who turned out to be a man.
