For the first major assignment for Professor Julia Green’s Communication 211 for Spring 2016, I partnered with classmates Lori Rainey and Sarah Beattie to “analyze how the different forms of communication yield different results when it comes to communicating” (Green, Week 4 - Major Assignment 1: Blog). By going through the exercises, I have reconfirmed that the form of online communication best suited to me is email versus social media such as Facebook, or texting. Unlike some people, I find texts are more difficult to respond to for many reasons, including the limitation of the touch-screen keypads, as well as the synchronicity of the communication, depending on the user’s attention to their phone. As an example, I routinely forget my cell…

According to Dr. Schweingruber’s lecture, “the self-fulfilling prophecy is an assumption or prediction that in itself cause the expected event to occur, thus seeming to confirm the prophecy’s accuracy.” The self-fulfilling prophecy is a funny thing. It is weird to think that if you think that something might happen, it is more likely to happen. The predictions could be both direct or indirect, or even positive or negative. For example, in class we talked about Oedipus, The man who was predicted to kill his dad, got abandoned by said dad, then later came to power and killed his dad without even knowing he was part of a prophecy, a self-fulfilling prophecy that is.…

Heritage is the first of the symbols in the story “Everyday Use” whereas, momma and Dee disagree. The quilts are a symbol of the heritage that momma wants to put to everyday use as Dee thinks they should be preserved and put away (Kriszer & Mandell, 2016). The way momma views the heritage of these quilts that are made from family clothing as far back as to the civil war is that they need to stay in the family and in the way the family has always had used them. They need to be displayed on the beds of her younger child’s new home when she moves away. Not as Dee would preserve them in plastic bags and stick away just to bring out when she wants to show off her old way of life to her new way of life’s friends and views.…

Self-fullfilling prophecy is the idea where an individual acts based off a prediction, causing the prediction to become true. For example, if you wake up one morning and predict that your day will be dreadful , you will tend to notice the dreadful situations that occur during the day, hence making your prediction come true. According to The Antioch Review, Self-fulfilling prophecy is how people respond to a certain situation and what that situation means for the individual. Once the individual has a meaning to the current situation at hand, they begin to mold their behaviour to fit the consequences of the predicted situation (Merton, 1948).…

An experience from my life that I shall analyze using a sociological lens took place during elementary and high school. Opening in elementary school, which I attended after my two eldest sisters had already began a few years before me, I started to be noticed by numerous teachers as their sibling. My oldest sisters both did a notable job in school, achieving noticeably high grades and a well-known acknowledgment for their excellent behaviour. Consequently, my teachers all had established high expectations for me to reach by the time I was in grade eight. These set outlooks from teachers about how I was supposed to perform and to what level of success I was expected to exceed was a highly effective motivator.…

Self-fulfilling prophecy is defined as when someone’s expectations for another person lead them to perform in a way that confirm that expectation. For example, at my old job my manager thought that I was a capable person because my friend, who referred me to him, told him good things about me. He signaled his expectations by always checking up on me to make sure that I was doing okay. He would help me with things I didn’t know about. Since it was my first job, which meant I did not have any experience.…
